on Check 6 calls -evil grin-
« on: February 11, 2006, 10:49:19 PM »
Ok .. this has prolly been said before ..but ..

Check 6 I have always regarded as a courtesty, great to get 'em when ya do, but frankly, if I get shot down because I dint look back, it's on me.

I fixate .. I know that. I also focus on whats goin on around me (or try to, till that bandit pulls up in front of me, and I'm closin, and I know I just need a few seconds more ..we've all done it ;)

Intense fights, seems like there is always someone that gets shot and immediately starts blastin everyone around him that it was *their* fault ..
.. to those types .. it's the Pilot in Command that has the ultimate responsibility.. the guy workin the stick.. to look out the back window now and then -evil grin- ..frankly if I see someone bein snuck up on, I will give a check 6 .. but ..if I am up to my armpits in bandits with 2 off right, 3 above, another closing left, and a few more ahead.. I am focusing on which one is the greatest threat and trying to take him out or avoid him.

Sometimes .. I just dont have time to take my hands off the controls to hit f12 and read the CPID (especially if its giberish or nonsense ..keep em simple if ya want folks to be able to read em!) and give a check 6.

Yassir.. I know I should wire it to a button .. somewhere .. and then build the reflex to use it in a split second .. I havent yet.

Good attitude, greyeagle...and I think you're 100% spot on about 6's.

If I get surprised from behind, its MY fault. If friendly gives me a 6, thats great, but its not their fault if I die.

Most guys who scream about 6s are just venting their frustration, anyway.... the adrenaline hits hard when unexpected pings rip your wing off. There are a few who are chronically unable to realize tehy bear some responsibilty for what happens to them, but whaddya gunna do bout them....

These last 2 tours ahve been the first I've really developed teh "swivel head", after long months of varying target fixation. Its made ahuge difference in my flying and AH experience, but its something that took me a very long time to get from "knowing it in my head" to actually doing it lots.

You'll move way ahead faster than I did if you make situaional awareness a priority. (Watch both where the cons are, and what your general situation is -- like knowing to get out of the valley as soon as you can een without red dots visible, becuase there's an enemy base above the next ridge...)

I don't even hit the Check 6 button, I go right to the range channel. Personally, *I* prefer being warned that way, too, as sometimes a simple "Check 6" doesn't say enough (like, what's behind me, which way should I break, etc). Also, I've been checked when I've been closing on a bandit's 6 because the guy giving the call didn't see the range marker (I've done it too with voice warnings, but it's a lot more obvious when a good samaritan misreads D). Usually I DO look back first before breaking, but it's easy to give up a kill that way.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

An enthusiastic chorus of "Check 6, deadman" usually shuts them right up. I've seen the same thing countless times over the years, and the cheerful group response always makes me laugh.

chk 6 call lags quite a bit, as well as vox lags when someone else is talking to that guy too at the same moment (via radio channle or private vox, range vox gets delayed).

So mostly when you definetly see it its already verry late for the check 6.
So the option is to spam everyone with chk6s as soon as an enemy is close or only give out verry view chk6s that  help anything cause they are to late anyways.

I send them when I can, but I ignore all check 6's because its usually one of my squaddies trying to make me break off a badguy so they can steal the kill.
