From recent posts it seems that it's WinXP that has problems with dual cores. The latest build of Windows (in beta testing) is going to be a huge resource hog of an OS, and totally unacceptable to me (and probably most) [EDIT: By this I mean "no use waiting for the next Windows, it won't help much"], so that leaves only Win2k, which is reported to have no problems with multiple processors.

It seems the problem is the OS, not the hardware.

the new OS for windows (Vista) is a monster (i have the misery of beta testing it)   its gonna require a 64 bit cpu and probely 2 gig in ram .. as of now its only in 32 bit mode and wont run 90% of the games .. IE7 is the same way as of now

Pop down to the hardware forum  .. Bloom just wrote up the goods on the latest pc stuff .

I have a Dell Dimension 9150 (Intel motherboard) with a Pentium D dual core, running Windows XP Pro.  It is perfectly stable.  Out of the 100-200 computers I've been involved in buying over the years, I've had best luck with Dells.  I have no experience with AMD processors.

Medd,

If your buying a gaming rig and thats basically it , then tryout a few places that build custom machines.

If your buying a family type PC that you still want to use for gameing , then look into the HP 820. It comes with Windows Media Center. It plays AH just fine. Not GREAT mind you , but pretty darn good. Plus it has a lot of bells and whistles to go with it.

Can't speak about Dells.

I bought my gaming rig from Cyberpower systems. I added stuff to it and made it more expensive. The one like I got base price , which is loaded up really , was 2999.00. You can build them from base starting points on different stuff. Intel , AMD so on and so on.

As far as I know dualcore would be a good way to gowith the one exception being AH2 which will lock up unless you disable one of the cores.

The reason why you're reading this is because my Dell XPS dual-core with Windows XP can't pick up my microphone through the Windows "Test Hardware" panel unless the foam windsock is tickling my epiglotis.

AH graphics are pretty, though.  That's about the only good thing that's come out of my $4k investment in new hardware.

Haven't had any lock-ups (yet).  I guess that's a good thing.

Intel dual core is fine.

AMD dual core supposedly has some issues with Windows XP or vice versa.

I suspect that you have your settings misconfigured (such as not having the +20 dB microphone boost selected as is normal).  I don't think that this is any issue with the hardware.
