Good company to order from online?
« on: February 18, 2006, 02:23:58 PM »
I've posted before on this topic and asked pretty much the same question.
I placed an order for some CH Pro Pedals from Mwave.com on Tuesday, received a confirmation email that day, then received an email on Wednesday saying FedEx could ship to a PO Box, could I please contact them with a physical address, etc........
I go online, correct my shipping information to reflect my physical address, like they asked, then just to make sure I did everything right, I called them.
I finally got through after 15 minutes on hold, told them what I was calling about, and they asked for the number on the back of my card (I am using my MasterCard check/debit card to make my online purchases), which I gave them.  Then, they asked for my home phone number......no problem, I give that to them too.
Keep checking my order status, each day it says "Not Approved", "Not shipped", etc., but..........the funds have been drawn from my checking account on the 16th.
Call them today and the person I talked to said she needed the phone number of my bank so she could verify the funds.  I told her the money had already been withdrawn and I wanted to know when the order would ship.
She got kinda nasty with me and said they needed my bank phone number once again, and that they could not ship to a PO box.
I put up with that for only a few more minutes, went over the phone I placed to them on Wednesday with her, told her once again that the funds had been drawn from my account and I wanted to know when the pedals would be shipped.  "IF we can get your bank phone number from you today, we can call them on Monday and maybe ship them that day".....
Now I know several folks on here have had good luck with this company, so I am not trying to say they are all bad.  I just had a bad experience with them.
Is there, or ARE THERE, any companies out there who have a solid reputation that I can count on to process and ship my order?  I already called my bank and asked them what they can do to retrieve my funds, and they said all I can do is ask for a refund, which I doubt will happen til the end of the month when I get a bank statement to prove that the funds for the purchase were actually taken, THEN I might be able to convince Mwave to refund my money.
I am sick of trying to order things, only to have them backordered or not processed.
Funny thing is, and I told the person this morning, no one else has ever asked me for my bank's phone number before when I made an online purchase.  I don't want to sound paranoid, but it smelled like one of the scams I have heard of.  I told her that and told her to cancel my order immediately......she said she would do that and I would receive an email within the hour confirming cancellation.
That was three hours ago, no email........have I been scammed?  I have read about company website's being hacked into and customer account information stolen and money lost to the scam artists.

I usually order from newegg.  I also made one order through tigerdirect and had no problems.

I have no experience with mwave although they've been around for years.  If I were you, I'd call back and ask to speak to a supervisor, and confirm the order cancellation.

If they give you any further problems, call your bank and report the charge as fradulent.  Make sure you go to resellerratings and give feedback as appropriate.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

While I use Newegg for most of my online ordering, they do require the phone number from the back of your card for your bank as part of the verification process.  As technology gets better, and we move into a more and more digital world, it gets easier and easier to order stuff with a credit card number when you dont physically have a card in your hand.  I've memorized my credit card number from all the times I've typed it in ordering stuff.  I know my security number on the back.  Besides, that stuff is easy enough to get just by writing it down.  Home phone and address is harder, but not impossible.  The bank phone number is just another step.  I believe its part of the "verification by visa" program (although mastercard may have it too).

Mwave here, although Newegg is probably better known.

Mwave has always been good to me.

Thanks to all of you for your replies.
I don't know for sure just what was going on, it just frightened me and angered me when I found out the funds had already been taken out of my account.
I won't write Mwave off, but if I deal with them in the future, it will be with money orders only and I will mail any payments in via USPS.
Still trying to decide who to go with for these pedals, I will pick one of them and order Tuesday (my next day off work).

Hmmmmm.......  IMHO

If you have one always use your CREDIT card.

I found trying to deal with these people using a DEBIT card can be a HUGH pain!

Also....... you have greater protection with a CC over DC.  I notice that many are trying to make the DC as secure as the CC.

Creates allot of extra stuff though.

Not quite 100% true wrag. Visa debit cards are treated the same as a credit card by Visa. Visa has their "zero liability" protection for both debit and credit cards.

Well hmmm..........

IIRC you will have to go through extra steps for a debit card vs a credit card even with Visa.

What extra steps?

Because I certainly do not have to do anything "Extra".

I've been running this Debit card online for the last 6 years.

In that 6 years I've had exactly 2  things happen.

A overran my single day limit once on a computer purchase.
Called company, had em split order, run it through on 2 days.
Then called bank & raised my limit.

B Deposited money week ago last friday morning.
Money showed online as being in the acct fri evening.
Called bank, checked limit, checked that there was indeed enough in the acct
to cover.

Charge was declined.  Called company, had them run it through again. Went through the following monday just fine.  Only thing I can figure is that Visa's server was running 12 hours behind the banks.

And that is the ONLY difference. I have to have the money on hand in the first place. Was my mistake for rushing it a day. Was eager to get parts on the way for my new computer.  :)

Newegg's warehouse is in CA and gets to the NW tip of WA in 2 days. Depending on where you live in TX, it might get thre that fast.

That's why I've always liked NewEgg.
