Comp Usa Now Has Tm Hotas
« on: February 19, 2006, 10:09:21 AM »
Saw this in Comp USA when my Bro in law picked up his rig

Comp USA now carries the TM HOTAS seup (stick and throttle) in its stores.

Nice stick but Im not impressed nor do I really like the button layout on either the stick or throttle.

The reach to the top hat is a bit much as is mentioned in another thread and the other buttons themselves seem less then intuitive.

Probably works great for a Real F-16. I just dont see it working great for computer sims where the stick is more then often on the desktop and not low between your legs or for anything other then an F-16 sim.

Wish they would start carrying the CH stuff in stores as Im more of a hands on type person and like to be able to see and touch stuff before I buy it and find out I dont like it

Yeah I saw it the other day when I was picking up the new power supply for my computer.  239 bucks I think it was here.  I dont mind the feel of it so much, it fits me ok.  I just look at all those dang hat switches and wonder what I'd ever do with that many.  More buttons.  Less sliding and rolling switches.

Although I have to say, it was looking more attractive when I couldnt use my old CH gameport gear for a day or two.  Ah well.  Temptation survived.  :)

Actually the stick isn't too large at all. Even I with my quite small hands mannage it very well. I pretty much never use the handrest, there is no need really. It does take some time getting used to though.

The CH setup (combatstick etc) are actually a bit larger and harder for people with small hands.

The TM HOTAS has tons of potentian but to really "be all it can be" some modding is needed for it, which I haven't been able to afford yet. The spring forces are nice when you move it either up and down or left and right BUT when you combine (say up right) the forces become twice as heavy which is anoying and makes fine aiming more difficult.

Perosnally I love the button layout, the Throttle is far superior to any other throttle I'd had my hands on, much thanks to the trim knobs but also thanks to the other buttons, they all feel as they are placed where they should be, not to mention the actual shape of the throttle. The stick feels the same more or less, once used to it, it feels great.

HOWEVER I would not recomend it for AH as, the stick forces are too heavy in its stock version. It makes gunnery a bit more difficult.

As it is now I use the throttle (can't live without it) and a Sindewinder PS Pro 2 stick for AH, all other games I use the Cougar!

Remove the rubber boot to GREATLY reduce stick force and you can open the stick and switch the hats around.

Been there done that. It is still too heavy when moved XY cordinates ;)

Too heavy for AH I might add, not for anything else.

As I've said countless other times before its all personal preference. I love mine except for the transition areas and as soon as the RCS mod gets paid for then I am having IJ toss me into the next run for his gimbals. IL-2/PF/FB is where I find the thing hardest for those shots where I need minimal stick forces. So now that you can put your hands on them instead of buying the things first I think they will do well. I also love the Foxy software that is packaged with it. It makes programming the thing a breeze and then all those nifty buttons and hats come into play in AH. When I fly with it I rarely have to take my hands off the throttle and stick; all the trim and radio functions are programmed into my throttle and pinkie bar/button and it makes life in the air much easier.

Ok, Wilbus, I can agree with that.  The stock spring configuration is crap.
