Strange - Check my sig, runs fine with BOTH cores for me.

Two things to try -
Get nVidias beta drivers from 82.65 onwards (dual core issues fixed). Avail from http://www.guru3d.com . I use 83.40 drivers at the moment.

Or

If using XP there is a registry hack to disable dual core support in the nVidia drivers, but still leaves you with two CPU cores running.

Of course the best solution is to ditch the XP P.O.S. operating system and use Windows 2000.

But you are running W2K Kev. The hot fix from MS does not fully correct/address the problems with AMD dual core systems in XP.

The registry hack for disabling threading in NVidia's driver may fix the problem, but I have not heard a confirmation for it yet.

True Skuzzy, not using XP, never liked it, never will.

Got a horrible feeling I'll feel the same way about 'Vista' also, shaping up to be Microsofts biggest bloatware EVER.

I do not care for XP either (I use W2K as well). And I am not looking forward to the support calls/emails when Vista hits the streets either. It ain't gonna be pretty.

XP was built off the Windows 2000 kernel so shouldn't be a great deal of difference (if any).

Think of XP as the Windows 2000 kernel with the built in bits to make it more luring for the masses. Then screwed up by Microsoft prior to release.

Grits, I've read similar claims, and some stuff about the way DX works, and how Win2k doesn't have DX (or handles it differently??) that makes XP better, more "native" for games.

Again, I don't know if this is true, but I've read some stuff.

Well Win 2000 definately has DirectX, as for handling it differently who knows.

Only ever had two problems running AH2

1) Switching from single to dual core and doing an on-the-fly HAL change resulted in lockups. A re-install with multi CPU/core HAL solved all issues.

2) Was getting lockups after fitting a 7800GS, turned out to be a setting I had changed in the BIOS when tweaking my 'old' 6800GT.

Nothing has occured that could be put down to either VIA, AMD or Microsoft, mainly me tweaking for specific configs and the on-the-fly HAL change (which Microsoft doesn't recommend).

Just about sums it up.

Should add I don't believe their are any issues with Intel or AMD duellies running serious apps.

There are some games that have issues with both dual core Intels and AMDs.
Best thing to do is to check the support forums for a game your going to buy if your running dual core. Most are getting the issues sorted out slowly.

Is anyone runnig AH2 with ATI and an AMD dual? If so and it's OK it ties the problems down to nVidia drivers.

By the way Brooke, the games you mentioned (other than AH) are not multi-threaded. There are only a handfull of games on the market which are designed to be multi-threaded and even fewer which are actually multi-threaded.

Im using a 1.6 pentium w/ 512 ram and a 128 meg video card. I get around 30 or so fps ...up to high 40s at times. But...I have ground detail set like 1/2 an inch from the far right, and detail and object size about and inch from the far right on my sliders.

From my experience I get quite a bit better framerate in XP then I do with W2K. Get an increase of 15 fps in AH when I use XP instead of W2K.

Same thing goes on other computers I've tried it at.

placing the sliders in game at about 1/2 way and setting the viz to medium netted me 75FPS overall sometimes dipping into the 50s

Yesterday I tried it online, with the above settings. There was about 20 players on, I had between 36 and 60 fps, in Viipuri area. I even recorded some stutter, but I was downloading at that moment!
