I just added about 4MB worth of photos of the ARR in WWII to our squad site. Included Bf 109E and G, IAR 80 and 81, He 111 and He 112, and Hurrican Mk I images, plus several photos of pilots and group shots. Info for the images will be coming up, I was more concerned with getting the page up right now. I'll try and have the captions done by the end of the weekend. But I thought some of you Eastern Front and 109 fans might like to see what I've managed to scour up thus far.

Go to the link in my sig and click the Navigation link, then go to images and then photos. Theres also a page on there of aircraft profiles. I have many more, but I've only put profiles on there that I can ID with 100% certainty so far.

And make sure you give it time to load.

What is the G-6/G-14 with the erla haube canopy and the stars-and-stripes on the tail? It's shown in 2 photos, the second photo showing what seems to be philipino or some sort of weird roundels under the wings.

The 109 with the American flag was flown by Captain Carl Cantacuzino of the Rumanian Air Force. This was done after Rumania switched sides. Even more interesting was when the 109 landed at a US bomber base in Italy, the pilot hopped out and opened up the radio panal on the fuselage and out came Lt. Col James Gunn formerly deputy commander of the 454th BG, 15th AF. Gunn had been made a POW after being shot down on a raid. Gunn was bringing info on 3600 Allied POWs in Rumania so they could be returned to Allied territory.

Cantacuzino was apparently the leading ace of the Rumanian AF with 64 kills if the info in the 454th BG history is correct.

Prince (yes, Prince) Constantine Contacuzino.

Only became the top-ace after the death of Alexander Serbanescu to American Mustangs in August of 1944, his few kills against the Luftwaffe after the coup put him on top.

Had to hit my records for exact numbers, Contacuzino survived the war with 54 a/c destroyed (as opposed to victories, the ARR credited victories by number of engines the plane had- 1 for 1 engine, 2 for 2 engines, 3 for anything more than 2 engines), and Serbanescu died with 52. Serbanescu scored all of his in the 109, and Contacuzino scored the majority in the 109.

Next closest had 38, so they were by far rhe "best of the best" for the ARR.

(Edit- in case anyone is wondering, ARR stands for Aeronautica Regala Romana, or Royal Romanian Aeronautics)

They were crudely painted on USAAF stars, looks like they included the red center circle.

Wonder if it would qualify as a skin? Not captured.

Prince Constantine Contacuzino had greek blood coming straight from
the Byzantine Emperor Catacuzino <-(the right writing).
He was very risky and good pilot.
Something usual for him was to fly inverted 3 feets from the ground.
Famous for his aerobatics.

Just a little side note..

..if he really carried the "Cantacuzenos" bloodline, then that's a truly remarkable thing. The Cantacuzenos family were one of the most important part of the later Roman aristocracy based in Constantinople(nowadays Istanbul) and produced many Emperors. They were the heart of the Byzantine aristocracy along with the Paleologus family.

I didn't know there were modern day descendants of the Cantacuzenos.

Is there still a Paleolgus bloodline too?

Haven't been on the AH boards for quite some time, but I finished this model several months ago. It's the 1/32 Pro Modeler G-4 kit with minor conversions to a G-2. I know the full rudder stripes are inaccurate but I thot they were too cool to leave off.
