Omega or Nvidia Drivers?
« on: February 22, 2006, 06:07:43 PM »
Does anyone have any experience with Omega Drivers vs. Nvidia? I don't do any games other than AH if that makes a difference. My video card is a BFG 6800GS OC 256M AGP in a Dell Pentium 4 3G with 1G memory. I'm currently using the most up to date Nvidia drivers, but I did use the Omega drivers briefly as I was trying to work out a problem during the original video card install. I didn't have a chance to play AH with the Omega drivers though.

One last question?? When I had the Omega drivers loaded I saw an option in the Nvidia control panel that I believe was called Optimize and it looked as though it would automatically optimize the clock speed. Is there any advantage or disadvantage to doing this? I realize if you don't know what you’re doing and over clock that you could cause damage. But does this self test optimize safely??

Thanks for your help,
Scott / SloStick

You can get the same options for the standard nVidia drivers by installing a registry hack called "Coolbits".

With a 6800GS you'd be better off getting Rivatuner and trying to unlock the masked off pipes and vertex shader.
It should unlock without and a problem, all you have to do is test it in games then.
If you get no artifacts you've just got yourself a 6800GT.

Drivers- try either 82.65 or 83.40 .

Drivers, Coolbits, Rivatuner avail from http://www.guru3d.com

Their forums have a wealth of info also.

Thanks for the reply Kev367th...  I did get Riva Tuner but I couldn't find where the "unlock pipes" and shader was, and being somewhat of a novice I am also concerned that if it doesn't work in the game can you go back to the original settings? I thought I read somewhere that it "flashed" the card. Does Rivatuner also have an optimize feature that allows overclocking that is optimized for your system? Are those drivers mentioned Nvidia drivers or someone else?

if i read the omega site right , the drivers are almost a year old . It looks like he has put the nvidia drivers on hold for the moment .   In riva tuner , at the top where your card is listed hit customize / click on the little video card / then install the strap driver. From there the pipe counfiguration  will be in  the setting box  "active pixel/vertex units , click the drop down menu and select custom . Look for the pixel unit that says disabled , and check it . Hit apply and resatart. That should do the trick aslong as the pipes arent defective . If they are bad , just go back in and uncheck it . Good luck 38

Drivers I mentioned are for nVidia cards.

As the other guy said, if the unmasking of the hidden pipes and vertex shader gives you artifacts, just go back into rivatuner and disable them again.

Instructions for proper install of video drivers.

Pick 1 driver:

Nvidea - http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp - go here and download the drivers to your desktop.

ATI - http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/....x=5&submit.y=4 - go here and download the drivers to your desktop.

Omega tweaked drivers. Recommended by Nvidea and ATI - http://www.omegadrivers.net/main.php - go here and download the drivers to your desktop.

Now get DriverCleaner:
http://www.drivercleaner.net/ - Put it on your desktop

Now install DRIVER CLEANER

Go to add and remove programs and remove all references to ATI or Nvidea.

Restart in safe mode. Usually by clicking the f8 button during reboot.

DO NOT INSTALL ANYTHING if windows asks.

.

Run DRIVER CLEANER. Pick the appropriate filter in the scroll down box AND CLICK THE CLEAN button.

Then restart. DO NOT INSTALL ANYTHING once again. It's ok, all will be well :)

When you reach your desktop click on the driver you downloaded and follow prompts.

Restart..

If you have any problems read the helpfile that comes with DRIVE CLEANER.
