Anybody know if there is such a thing that allows you to plug an old, gameport style joystick into the USB port?

Yes there is I have one but have no idea where I got it from.
it might have come with some crap i bought you might check radio crack or some electronics stores.

just do a search, lots of places sell them on the interent. Radio Shack has one, although I did not have good experience with it. Of course it was only 10 bucks, and I often find the old saying "you get what you pay for" is true.

I'm not saying the expensive ones work better. I dont see the point in spending 50-80 dollars on a converter when for a little more I can buy a decent USB joystick. But ive seen plenty of them between 20 and 30 bucks.

Heck, I remember seeing one company that makes a USB converter to plug your playstation or nintendo gamepads into a PC and get them to work. Go figure. Technology can do wonders.

There is...but it's not going to be plug-n-play and It probably wont be programable with the default software.

how about getting an old soundcard to plug your analog gear into?

Yep. That was my solution. I used the Radio Shack converter and it wouldnt recognize the hat switch on my CH Flightstick Pro. It also refused to take a decent calibration. X axis had the worst fluctuation I've ever seen. It was basically unuseable. Put the soundcard in, plugged in the joystick, works fine. I'll keep the gameport, even if it does cost me a PCI slot.
