Have a friend on AOL who keeps getting disco'd which makes chatting difficult. Having the same problem with Yahoo messenger
So we were thinking about going to a different software.

Team speak. How woud you set up or get to a server? Dunno how this works or if its even worth dealing with for what we want to do

any other software out thre besides Messenger, or ICQ?

I use Trillian

You use it with any of the other message system accounts (ICQ, AIM, YahooIM, MS Messenger, IRC Chat..etc). It is a clean IM with no adds flashing. If you know several people on different IM accounts, you can monitor them all with Trillian. I use it with an ICQ account and it works just fine.

I like Teamspeak. It reminds me of the old BattleCom software that M$ bought out and screwed up with their "Game Commander" crap a few years ago. With Teamspeak you have to setup the server but thats fairly simple. Also you can stack channels and then setup your buttons no your stick setup to allow you to change between the different channels. It also has a whisper function which lets you key into specific players without everyone else hearing it...again very similar to the old Battlecom software while I loved.

Google talk is really cool. However, it may happen with that program too. Google talk has exceptional sound quality. Either way, its free so you cant really lose trying it. All you need is a gmail account, and if you dont have one I can send you an invite for it.

I've used Teamspeak a lot and have found it to work well. You don't need to set up a server -- there are hundreds of free ones around that you can use. The only problem is that any particular one isn't guaranteed to stay around, so if you pick one, after a month or so it might go away. You can always find one, though, at any given moment and just send an e-mail with the name of the server.
