Message from the CHP (carjacking scam)
« on: March 03, 2006, 01:04:23 AM »
Forwarded from my brother, a Stanislaus County Sheriff's Deputy:

> Here's the scenario:
>
> You walk across the parking lot, unlock your car and get inside.  You
> lock your doors, start the engine and shift into reverse.
>  You look into
> the
> rearview mirror to back out of your parking space and notice a piece
> of paper stuck! to the middle of the rear window.
>
> You shift into PARK, unlock your doors, get out of the car and walk to
> the rear to remove the paper (or whatever it is) that is obstructing
> your view.
> When you reach the back of  your car, car-jackers appear out of
> nowhere, jump into your car and take off!  Your engine was running and
> they practically mow you down as they speed off.
>
> Guess what ladies and gents?  I'll bet your purse and/or other
> valuables were still in the car!
>
> THIS IS A NEW CAR-JACK SCHEME THAT IS NOW BEING USED...VERY
> SUCCESSFULLY.
>
> What to do:  Just drive away and remove the object that's stuck to
> your window - later.
>
> Be thankful that you read this email.  It would be a good idea to
> forward this warning to friends and family; especially to
> women!   Their
> purses
> contain all of their identification, and you certainly do NOT want
> someone getting your home address, because - guess what - they already
> HAVE your keys!
> Take care everyone,
>
> Lieutenant Tony Bartolome,
> Bureau of  Investigations - California Highway Patrol

Y a gotta admit.. in these days of complex new car security and all...

It SEEMS like a good idea.... till you realize that...

Getting into the car, walking pas the rear window, you would have to be a zombie to not notice the paper stuck to it.   and the guys hanging around your car should be another tip that something is wrong.

LOL... ya know, I immediately thought about snoping it, but I looked at the headers and the message did come from the CHP to the Sheriff's department so I didn't bother.

Just shows that the cops are not immune to urban legends.

Oh well... my bad. Mark your calendars. I've been had.

This has nothing to do with this alleged scheme, but I almost always back into every parking spot, even at home.  My theory is that I am usually in less of a hurry when I arrive, there is usually better light in the day when I get home that early in the morning when I leave and I typically have better visibility of the area when I approach, so I’m less likely to run something over (like a little kid).  Also if it snows much I’d rather drive forward through it than back through it.
