If they find it offensive then they need to toughen up.

What in THE hell?  :huh

I don't see how the image could be offensive....it's apparently what they do.  As for appearing ridiculous, well....

They are a sensative people.  A photograph that doesn't picture them well and showing a cleric desecrating a koran could be seen by the west as hypocritical and thus offensive to muslims everywhere.  Of course that's if the wind is blowing northwesterly in mecca.  If it's blowing to the south they have a completly different thing to be offended about.

Expression of grief?

Looks to me like they're laughing, dancing and generally getting hysterical.  Not saying I know any better...but that don't look like grief to me.

Truly, the only thing really missing is a brick for each hand...

Beating your head and chest is an expression of grief amongst Shi'ite Muslims, for instance on Ashura, the Holy Day where they mark they martyrdom of Ali (the man the believe to be the true Caliph) they spend the day beating their heads and chests and gashing their heads with swords.

Sunnis more commonly beat their chests (for instance watch a Muslim funeral some time and watch what the women in particular are doing) to express grief. I'm almost 100% certain the mosque in the picture was Shi'ite.
