Is anyone here a licensed electrician?
« on: March 03, 2006, 09:25:35 AM »
I am a bit curious about it. my job is just that, a job, not a career.

for the past few months I have been helping my friend finish off his basement. we did all the work ourselves, including the electric. using books, we have had no problem. we even had a friend who pretty much knows most code check our work. it does not seem diffucult (basic home wireing), and it is something i do not mind doing.

what i am thinking about is an apprenticeship. i know i could go to school for it, but at 33 it is a bit late to start a school career for something i am not sure about.

so basically, what does an apprenticeship pay? how long to become a licensed electrician? i know there are many things i do not know about it, like say running a main in off the street to a new box, running 240 for appliances, so on, the "big" stuff. how much of the job is that kind of work? do apprenticeships still exist?

i have more questions, but thats enough for now.

I still carry my journeyman's card and prompty brandish it when some union tard shoots his mouth off about no skill welders.  that doesn't happen too much anymore as the the union's here with their racketeering type behavior have corrupted themselves out of the workplace.  the only place they still thrive is in the socialist republics of newyork and the northeast and michigan.

You gotta be sure, but 33 is YOUNG man!

My step-brother was 45, a partner with an e-commerce company and had two kids coming up to their teens when he decided to become an accountant.

I gotta hand it to the guy...he did online courses to get his university requirements within a year and a half and wrote and passed the CPA on his first try.

Now, bear in mind he now works for the firm in which HIS younger step-brother is a partner, effectively his boss.  I imagine that must have been a bit of a tough pill to swallow, but he did it and I respect the heck out of him for it.

I had a buddy when I was a teenager who father decded to become a corporate lawyer. He was in his 40s.

Only time its too late is when your dead.
