Film viewer settings
« on: March 03, 2006, 11:41:28 PM »
Greetings! I need the wisdom of experienced film makers here. I want to make an AH film with two soundtracks on the film: one with the sound of the planes, and the other with some background music. I know how to do it, but I am frustrated by a feature in the AH Film Viewer. Whenever I want to use external view and change the point of view by pressing the arrow keys on the keypad, I get the view that I want, but the Film Viewer gives these rapid bonging noises which Fraps picks up and records. To avoid the bongs, I have to set Fraps so that it doesn't record sound, but that means that I lose the plane sounds too.

So, the question: how can I change the settings in the Film Viewer so that the dinging no longer occurs. Can I do this?

Why is it there anyway?

Any help would be much appreciated.

eh, if i were you id take that plane sounds from your "sounds" folder and add them afterwards....

Or simply use your Joystick for views instead of the keyboard.

Thanks schatzi, but I could never add in the sounds so that they would be anything like they are in the filmed action.

Also, the hatswitch doesn't work in the Film Viewer if you are in external view, so I am forced to use the keyboard. .. and get bonged.

I don't mind using just music, and I know that I can get the terrific closeups that I need by experimenting offline or in the Training Arena, but I figured two soundtracks, one with Mitsu's sounds, the other with great music, would be awesome.

I figured out how to do it!  After all these years, I never even saw the danged horizontal and vertical scroll bars.

I've been messing around with the same idea as far as sounds.
I am/was...  a musician, so i do have some recording equipment.
What i was thinking about doing was this:
Using the mic line out, record the entire ah films soundtrack onto either my tape deck, or digital eight track..
Then using the mic line in, from line out on the tape deck or 8-track,   record the soundtrack as a wav file on the computer.
Then use a sound editor, like the windows sound recorder,  to take the  soundtrack, chop it up,  and make mini sound files, and use them for each part of the film.
Then to make the music and "action sounds" work together, i would record the music soundtrack on 1 track of the 8 track, and the action sounds on another, mix them and re-record them on the computer..
I bought music match jukebox a couple of years back, but i'm sure there are millions of others, that let  you record unlimited length tracks from your mic or line in..
or if you only have a tape deck:
play the actions track using one program, and the music track using another, and mix them with there volume controls, and record onto a tape.
then play the tape back through the comp. and record that as a wav file.
These are just ideas that i've come up with, not saying that they will work for you.

Thanks speed55. I have Adobe Elements, which will allow me to film with multiple sound tracks. All I need to do is to add a music soundtrack (from a ripped cd or from download) to the original film with the plane sounds and I am done. I hope!

Eh, the dinging sound is not a feature of Film viewer, it's just windows "not recognizing" the key pressure. If you want to avoid it, just disabled the keypad pressing the NumBlock key in the keypad (the upper left key). It will still work in Film viewer and you won't have any more dinging sound, except when you use the zoom keys which aren't on the keypad. :)
