Oscar Night Selections for Best Picture
« on: March 05, 2006, 04:31:34 PM »
Nominated for best picture are:

Capote

Brokeback Mountain

Crash

Good Night and Good Luck

Munich

_______________________

Also heard that "Paradise Now" was under consideration for an Oscar, but couldn't find any verification of that in the short time I had for preparing this post.

Seems to be a common theme or two in these films:  either openly gay characters or a seemingly sypathetic look at suicide bombers.

Is Hollywood trying to send a message?

Anyway...what are your predictions about which films will win the Oscar for best picture?

Regards, Shuckins

I shall summarize the plots of the five movies nominated for best picture below:

— "Brokeback Mountain" (gay)

— "Capote" (death penalty with bonus gay lead)

— "Crash" (racism)

— "Good Night, and Good Luck" (McCarthyism)

— "Munich" (Jew athletes at Munich had it coming)

Usually stealing a direct quote from another author is a bad thing....

and it still is.

BB Mountain is the favorite to win. I've heard that Crash may be the worst movie ever nominated for the Oscar. Haven't seen any of the nominees this year.

Funny, I had absolutely no interest in seeing any of those films. The oscars is another oportunity for entertainers to pat themselves on the back. Freaking waste AFAIAC.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

My thoughts exactly. However I have to hand it to hollywood, it appears they're actually putting out more family films (G or PG movies) than they have in the past.

On that note, our local "Large, mega-complex theater" at the Auburn Supermall only shows Bareback Mountain, has only one showing of the film each night, after 10pm :aok

Good Night and Good Luck is the only one of the nominated films I have any interest in.

I've only heard of one of those movies, and that's only because of threads on this BBS and guys at work complaining about it.  I haven't watched any of them and have no desire to do so.

Next year's Oscar winner better be "Snakes on a Plane"

Apparently, from what I have read about these films, none of them have been box-office successes.  Brokeback grossed a mere 75 million, which means between 7 and 10 million viewers bought tickets to see it.  Hardly a lucrative film...at least by modern standards.

Apparently, Joe Sixpack lacks the culture and refinement to appreciate fine art and actually spends his money seeing movies that are entertaining (and probably not gay).

Finally, now that the superbowl is over we've found something even less interesting than sports to discuss.

Been watching the show on and off while doing other stuff, and it is horrendously boring.
"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

The only one I saw.  It was one of the best movies I've seen in ages.

A few bright spots so far...

George Clooney - Best Supporting Actor - Syriana (always liked him)

Robert Altman - Honorary Oscar (Got to talk with him several times at legnth during the filming of Dr. T and the Women. He's a very cool guy... and what was he doing drinking tequila after a heart transplant?)

Reese Witherspoon - Best Leading Actress (I'd hit it.)

Wallace and Gromit and the Attack of the Were-rabbit - Best Animated Film (Cracking good cheese, Gromit!)

Jon Stewart is doing a good job as well.
