.45 cal ACP wheel guns
« on: March 07, 2006, 02:20:22 PM »
I'm considering a .45 ACP revolver as an in the truck weapon.  I'd like something of good quality inexpensive.  double action is a must.  I don't want to carry around my automatics or my .357s and my middle daughter just commandeered my model 85 taurus .38 cal which was my glove box gun.  she wants it in her truck and doesn't want to buy one. any suggestions?

the only 45 acp wheelgun I own is a 1917 smith.   They are ok.  I have shot model 25's... they are.... ok... conditionaly.   the full moon or 1/3 moon or 1/2 moon or every damn moon clips (I have tried)  that you need seem to cause the gun to bind up once in a while.

why .45acp?  if you're going to go with a .45 revolver go with a .45LC.  more power, and none of those 3-round clips to screw around with.  and if you really love the clips and the ACP rounds you can still fire them in most LC's.

I know there are excellent single action revolvers in .45 are there any double action .45LC?  I was afraid  they bound up occassionally.  I don't have any knowledge of their servicability and reliabilty.  I'd like the weapon to be reliable.

Or if you dont want to deal with the moonclips ............

I have to say I'm not the biggest fan of modern S&W revolvers, but they get the job done and they are like the Wal Mart of the gun world.  If there's something you want, they probably either make it or made it at some point in sufficient numbers that its not impossible to find used.

you can get a stainless super-redhawk chambered for the .45LC.

I think you can also feed them .454's if you want to put a really big hole in something.

Storch,

Buy a Taurus Millenium, .45 ACP.  It is a great truck gun, and requires little maintenance to keep it up and running at all times.  I clean mine once a year and that is it, and it shoots fine, all the time.  It is not a wheel gun, but, it does the job, feeds nicely (even with hydrashok) and is relatively inexpensive.
I regret doing business with TD Computer Systems.

I bought a Kimber Tactical custom two years ago but it's too purty for daily carry.  besides that I really prefer a wheel gun should I ever need really need it.

nothing at all but I want something with at least a 4" barrel and with the capacity to make large wound channels.  my .357s, a ruger security 6 which I don't want to risk getting stolen in a vehicle for sentimental reasons and a taurus 651 2" which is my pocket gun.

Storch,

I'd recomend you not go with the .45 acp in a revolver. It's an ok situation but you'll likely pay a premium for the chambering in a revolver and then there is the headspace thing to deal with. If you want a large bore revolver go with a .44 and just load .44 specials, not the magnums in it. Almost the same size projectile as the .45, better ballistics and no issues on where the cartridge headspaces. If you want to keep costs down Taurus had a .44 revolver a while back. I don't know if they still market it.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."
