IIRC, when you see the dot tagging along behind a plane, it's an observer, I guess, or at least I've been told this. I noticed one night that as an observer in a fighter, I only got proxies on the guys who augered behind us, making me think when you ride along, you're kind of "in tow" when attached to a fighter.
As for the dot zipping around a field, I've seen it, just never knew exactly what it was.
