While I was a Russian Linguist in the US Navy, we used to comment on the need to include hull mounted sonar arrays on the Yak-38.

Would have at least made them useful when they ended up in the drink.

38s were the temporary solution, new Yak-141 was supposed to replace them. First and only supersonic VTOL so far. Only two were built, at least one crashed, and then Kiev/Minsk cruisers were taken off duty and sold to China...

38s were "beta" version, "better then nothing".

Must be a new addition. I was in Monino on 2002 and I don't remember 141 there. IIRC only two were built...
