Computer Vision Syndrome
« on: March 11, 2006, 10:26:44 AM »
In the mid 90s before I started working around computers my vision was better than 20/20. Now I have become near sighted, things grow blurry with distance. I work with computers a lot at work, and when I'm at home, well, I'm Suave. I was talking to some people at work who are all from different countries, and they were saying basically that since they've started working in the us they've tried to avoid computers at work and at home as much as possible because they didn't want to damage their vision. I was like, what the hell are you primitives talking about? And they told me about computer vision syndrome as if it was common knowledge.

Is this common knowledge in the US? Have I just been living in a cave all this time?

I don't see how it could damage your vision. The eyes can be tired, yes, but damaged?? You would be soaking a lot of rads, then.

Don't forget that vision never improves with age. How old are you?

Since you’ve been working with computers you have also been getting older.  Age is the real culprit.  I’m certainly no expert but I have researched this a bit and found nothing credible that linked computer use to loss of eyesight.  I did find several references to studies that showed that there was NOT a link.

you don't lose vision, you lose the ability to focus on distance objects.

your eyes focus with focusing muscles, when all you do is look at close objects (computer screen, books) your muscles atrophy and you find it hard to focus on distance objects.

you should take periodic breaks from the screen and look at distant objects to exercise your eye muscles.

come to miami, go to south beach and try to count the number of topless girls within 200 meters of where you are standing.  that should help with your long distance focusing abilities.

I've been in front of a computer screen almost daily since 1986.  Starting in the mid 90's, I started working with computers and have been in front of them all day at work and then at home for more than a decade.

I still have perfect vision.

From personal experience, I'd say it's not the computer that's affecting your eyesight.

Thanks john, that's pretty much what it is. I can still read a wrist watch perfectly but can't read the clock accross the room. Happened over a period of just a couple years, and hasn't gotten any worse. I've become like the forgery guy in "The Great Escape".

And yes I realize that at 33 I shouldn't expect to have perfect vision anymore. But I also know that age isn't the cause of such a drastic change in visual accuity. Ramzey I haven't had my vision checked since this happened.

AT age 20 i was able count leafs on trees mile away
at age 23 i start work on PC's and my eye sight not get worse till about 27
at 27 i start have troubles and chk my vision. Same as my father i can see good at close distance but i start having problem to see details at far distance.
I have same eyeglasses  for about 5 years now, time to get next one.
My dad (RIP ) had lenses .5" thick im going to have same. My father never works on PC's
I did not realize how much worse my eyesight become till i not start using glasses.
Right now i wear glasses only in movie theatre and when i drive, cuz at 400-500 yards i cant read signs.
Is PC screen affect your vision, yes but genetics and age have bigger input

5 hours is about how much time each day that I am not reading print or video monitor.

Ramzey my parents never needed glasses, except my father when he was in 50s, and even then it was just for reading.
