On fire
« on: March 12, 2006, 03:31:59 PM »
I love the way zekes burst into flame when you sneeze at them. One thing that troubles me is the way they can still fly around as per normal for a fair whilst still on fire. How much fire (like the sort you see when they are on fire) can an aluminum wing with fuel in it survive for before it structurally fails?
Seems funny to me that a zeke can do its best asteriod burn-up impersonation and still be able to fly round for 5 mins or so shooting people down.

We have a pilot wound system, so we acknowledge that external factors can effect the virtual pilots performance. So why doesnt a virtual pilot who flies a screaming fireball not suffer from the heat & smoke it must be throwing off? Why can it fly round for 5 mins engulfed in a gas-fueled fireball, or so without the shuttle's heat protective tiles.

Im not singling out the zeke. It just seems to me the fireballing is little more than eye-candy (admittedly, very nice eye-candy) and has no other effect.

What do ya reckon?

At the very LEAST it should seriously affect the flying ability of the aircraft itself. I mean, how well is the thing going to handle when its control surfaces have burned to cinders? I certainly don't see it pulling high-G maneuvers with its wings turned into a raging ball of fire.

For that matter, I've seen planes doing other things missing very important components that stretches the limits of "gamey" (blew the outer half of a Hellcat's wing off once, and not only did he STILL continue to dogfight--killing me in the process--but when I reupped and returned to the area he was STILL there about 5mins later before he finally augered).
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

He about something where the plane slowly gets eaten away from the outside in.  For example, a wing tank fire would see the aileron fall off, then the flap, then the wign tip, then the whole damn thing.  Or a main tank fire it works it way forward from the rudder in the same way.  Not sure how accurate that would be but it's an idea.

we should also be able to dive the fire out. not to mention not catching fire at 30k.

You get flame = 20 seconds and BOOM bye bye. Just enough time to bail.

...or maybe flame, 10 seconds to blackout/loss of control then 10 seconds to BOOM!
Here we are, living on top of a molten ball of rock, spinning around at a 1,000mph, orbiting a nuclear fireball and whizzing through space at half-a-million miles per hour. Most of us believe in super-beings which for some reason need to be praised for setting this up. This, apparently, is normal.

Instead of loss of controls, what about loss of parts? A wing fire will eventually eat trough the wing, damaging it ofcourse.
Added to that it'd damage guns, gear etc. etc.

Maybe the most realistic mod could be to increase the burning plane's drag.  All that spilling, flaming fuel would seriously disrupt the airflow and increase drag quite a bit.  If this were done the pilot would be severely limited in ACM but still have the option of attempting a ditch.  Kinda irritating to torch someone and then have your Hurri chased down by a flaming zippo of death.  Admitedly, a Hurri has trouble outrunning an M3 but a guy streaming 50 ft of flame?  If the zippo doesn't have an afterburner something's wrong with that picture.

If I'd be shot to flames in the MA, it surely ditch/bail instead of trying to get the enemy. What point does it have? You won't land the kills anyway...

The point is there's gamey people out there who WILL. Haven't you seen all the guys falling down backwards after their tail was blown off with their finger clamped on the trigger?

I've even seen them with their fingers clamped on the trigger WITHOUT falling down in spirals!
