Well, seein as we are finally getting some of our planes redone with cool interactive realistic cockpits(I heard the B-17 was next), maybe we should find a way to destroy em. We should have destructable gadgets and doo-dads in the cockpit. Heres an example, you are flying a B-17 when a Nik2 comes in for the kill, he strafes your wingman and he explodes. You man the guns while he attacks your lead plane, you get him but he pumps you full-o lead. You return to your cokpit to find the fuel gauge, speed gauge, flight stick, and throttle blown to chit. You are screwed, realistically! Sounds cool, eh?

Sounds cool.

Not knowing anything about programming it seems hard to model though. Im not sure the hit bubble for "pilot wound" actually takes into account if your sitting in the cockpit or your guns. Without having tested or knowing, id guess you still get a PW even when youre in a gunner.

Destroyed gauges (from the near miss PWs - like the holes in the canopy glass) would be a nice touch.

As far as the flight controls are concerned - not sure a bullet wouldnt just ricochet off a metal pole (flight stick). Besides.... imagine the whines.....
21 is only half the truth.

We've got 'Pilot Wound' - how much would it take to add 'Instruments Hit'? This damage changes the image of the instruments to a picture of a wrecked flight deck, maybe with a little smoke/flame in the cockpit (for a short while) for effect. Some instruments still work, others completely trashed.

It would look pretty cool, maybe present a challenge to RTB with fewer controls.
Here we are, living on top of a molten ball of rock, spinning around at a 1,000mph, orbiting a nuclear fireball and whizzing through space at half-a-million miles per hour. Most of us believe in super-beings which for some reason need to be praised for setting this up. This, apparently, is normal.

How much frame rate loss for substituion of the cockpit image? You only need a flash of flame/smoke while the image changes.

Design time/design effort would be the biggest problem.

Imagine your clipboard being burned down completely :D (argh Im lost!)

I like the idea of cockpit hits, I believe something similar has been suggested before in the form of electrical/hydraulical damage, but this sounds good

The main setback of this is that cheaters could bring up the E6B and just use that to get home.
