Interesting story. Things I did not know:

"Canada's harp seal herd is a conservation success story"

"most humane seal hunt in the world."

"healthy and thriving" at nearly 6 million, a threefold increase since the 1980s.

Quebec and Newfoundland, whose livelihoods were devastated when the Atlantic cod stocks dried up in the mid-1990s, earn 25 percent to 40 percent of their annual income by selling the seal pelts and blubber for about $70 each.

The pelts used in the fashion industry are mostly sold to Norway, China and Russia.

well....Sir Paul McCartney is against the seal hunt so it must be bad (actually his one legged babe is leading him around by the crotch, but hey...thats cool).

Im against this sort of mass infanticide, even non human.  Goes against the grain for me.

The Inuet in Canada have been subsisting on this for centuries along with whaling. They use the entire animal and nothing goes to waste...it's very impressive.

Clubbing baby seals? Well, like Yeager says..."it goes against the grain"

you have that right...I saw the interview on Larry King with the McCartney's and she was pretty vocal (and defensive). I think it was the Permier of Labrador (maybe Newfoundland) who spoke up and put them in their place. He spoke quite well and put forth an arguement in favour of the hunt that I couldn't disagree with.

Rather than going through the trouble of registering a firearm ... we just use sticks.  I got me a brand new titanium bat to use this year.  It's light and packs one hell of a wallop.

To be honest, it did not even make news where I live.....

I have no problem with eating "intelligent" creatures. If they're so smart, how come they're sold by the pound? In fact, I'd probably eat more people if I weren't so busy collecting dolphins in my tuna net.

It didn't really register with me... until a week or two ago when there was a picture in the paper of Paul and his wife sitting in the ice. When I returned to work from my lunch, I had forgotten all about it.

So I guess the answer to your question: "How do our Canadian brethern feel about their Gov't approving seal hunts?" could probably best be answered by asking yourself how you feel about your government approving dear hunts. Or elk hunts. Or pig hunts. Or whatever.

Seals are just differently shaped deer. How are us "brethren" supposed to feel about it?
