Unfortunately Nirvana and Cpxxx are essentially right. St. Paddys day has morphed into a day in which one celebrates not Patrick, but "Irishness." Unfortunately, the public conception of being Irish largely consists of getting drunk and fighting constantly. So on a day when everyone is Irish, the idea is we all wear green and get hammered and pugnacious. Unfortunately, that's how I used to observe the day when I was working in NYC (then again, I didn't really need much of an excuse to get inebriated.)

You say that like it's a bad thing!

An Irishman comes home from the pub a bit earlier than usual only to find his wife in bed with a stranger.
"What are you doing" he shouts.
"I told you he was stupid" the wife said to the guy.

It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

What about American college students during Mardi Gras and Spring Break?

Same here, my family name goes back to the High King Brian Boru time around 1014 but very few are left in Ireland and far too many of the male line remained batchelors. (I'm working on a successor!).  Most with my family name live in the USA.  It's a strange situation.

On American beer? Not a chance. Maybe the English could compete you should see Temple Bar in Dublin on an average weekend night or Quay Street Galway and night during the Summer. Half the drunks seem to be English!:O  They can't take the Guinness;)

I have to admit my ignorance to the Euro-drinking.  I've only see college kids drink like flat out idiots.  And then you get things like "Guys Gone Wild".  Is there even a market for that?  Sure there is for Girls Gone Wild but...wow.
