Laptop Processor/Graphics questions..ah2?
« on: March 17, 2006, 03:30:28 PM »
Hi Everyone,

Well my 6 year old Dell Inspiron 8000 has finally bit the dust.  I knocked it off the table and it hit hard on my dog's waterbowl then the floor....OOPS! Wont boot, wont do much of anything right now after extensive drying and reassembly......I will not be getting it fixed...time to move on

Sooooooo.....its time for a new laptop.  My questions is what is the difference between all the various CPU's out there pro's/cons....these are some examples and Iam having trouble deciphering the differences.

IntelŪ PentiumŪ M Processor 780 (2.26GHz, 2MB Cache, 533MHz FSB) with Intel CentrinoTM Mobile Technology

IntelŪ PentiumŪ M Processor 770 (2.13 GHz, 2MB Cache, 533 MHz FSB) with IntelŪ CentrinoTM  Mobile Technology

IntelŪ Dual CoreTM  Processor T2500 (2GHz, 2MB Cache, 667MHz FSB) with Intel CentrinoTM Mobile Technology

IntelŪ PentiumŪ M Processor 765 (2.10 GHz, 2MB Cache, 400 MHz FSB) with IntelŪ CentrinoTM  Mobile Technology

Nest question.....onboard graphics viersus graphics cards....this laptop MAY be used to play AH2 whey I am away from home but it does not need to be the killer system that would break my bank.

Ideally I would like to keep the purchase under $1500.....any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Mike:)

PS anything to avoid?  Also....I would like to run this wirelessly at home but I do not want to sacrifice my network (I have cables running to all my rooms but i would like to add a port on the network to allow wireless transmission when using the laptop....is this possible.  Running a pure wireless network has caused problems in the past with AH2 and i want the very best connection for the game.  I think that by just adding some sort of access point to my existing router may do the trick...thoughts?)

The pentium based laptops are looking good.  Stay away from the onboard graphics.  Hit or miss. You might get lucky, most likely you wont.   Shop for one that's upgradeable, and more than likely what's in it now will be sufficient to play AH2, plus will leave your options open for the future.

Price:    $1,299.37

It has a PCI Express ATI X700 128MB video graphics card..I think much better than the Intel Graphics.

$1159 (down from $1400)
MXM (upgradable) 128M 6600go,  1.7 P-M (up to 2.6 also upgradable), 15.4" WXGA, i915 chipset, high def 2-ch audio, 802.11 a/b/g, 7 in 1 card reader, cd dvd-r..

I have this notebook, games great with a good upgrade options (MXM GPU, up to 2.6 P-M). The 16:10 aspect ratio WXGA is neato with movies. It doesnt have seperate buttons to play dvds / cds without booting or a physical volume control, but supposedly there are "Fn" key combonations that do the same things.
