Do yourself a favor and get a hardware firewall.  Linksys, Belkin, D-link, it doesn't really matter.  They're relatively cheap and you don't have to patch, there is no system load, and they won't mysteriously block outbound packets.  You won't accidently forget to turn it back on when troubleshooting or installing software.

Also, get a good (i.e. not McAfee or SAV) antivirus program.  There are 2 big attack vectors that a firewall can't cover, and they are Web and email.  More firewalled Windows PCs get pwned through IE than any other way.  You will either have to turn off all kinds of active content or get an AV program that doesn't lag by 48+ hours.  My family has had pretty good results with Avast!, which is free for home use.

I like the following Free Software:

Firewall: Zone Alarm
Anti-Spyware: Spybot and AdAware

I suggest a anti-virus (AV) program.  I use Nortons, but I get it free through work.  They don't like us bringing viruses from home :)

MS has some beta anti-spyware (AS) softare called Defender I am using now.  So far I have no problem with it.  They also have a beta called One Care that has AV and AS (I am not using this).  Search Microsoft and you will find this.

If you search of Spybot or AdAware, go to a download site ( like http://www.download.com) and search.  If you just do an internet search, there are a lot of crooks who will lead you to the wrong site and try to sell you something.

Once you get it up and running, check out a site like GRC and do the tests like Shields Up to see how well your protection is working.  This site has a lot of good information.

SpywareBlaster keeps you from picking up most spyware/adware before it affects your machine. I use it in addition  to Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware and Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta. You can get SpywareBlaster as well as the others here: http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html

I like Mozilla foxfire browser and Mozilla thunderbird for email , I use SpywareBlaster , Adaware , and I also would stongly recomend you stay away from Norton & Symantec  products ! for AntiVirus, you can get 1 year free ( full version ) of Computer Accoiates AV ( the very same AV engine that ZoneAlarm Secuirty Suiet uses,  thru the Microsoftsoft Secuirty website under downloads,  trials & secuirty other software  , It works fast , updates constantly and is a very small foot print .
Also you can "snooze it " for gaming (  easy ) . Uses very little resorces ...

Ad-Aware

I purchased ad-aware awhile back before it was popular.  Best $10 I ever spent.  Plus in included free downloads of any new versions.  I think now you can buy it in stores for about $40..  There may still be a free version of it, but it doesn't run in the background.. you can only do manual scans.

I think i'll give avast a try... getting pretty sick of Norton.
