Ask Pastor Nit-Wit?
« on: March 21, 2006, 12:40:54 PM »
Hi All,

Several days ago I received a message from a list member who shall remain nameless asking me if I would start an "Ask the Pastor" thread for asking and answering religious questions in the O-Club.

My initial reply to him was that it probably wouldn't be taken seriously by anyone and might end up generating more heat than light, but I promised I would ask the BB members if there was any interest in that kind of thing.

So after much sloth and foot-dragging on my part, I'm asking if there is any interest in such a thread.

heck, it could turn into ti's own sub-forum easily with the way things work here. :lol

darn near every topic eventually breaks down into something religious in some way

Why not?  They have a radio show that does pretty well, you might as well expand the concept.  Before you tie yourself to this though, can you afford the time?  If you think you can, then have at it.

Well admittedly spare time isn't something I have a lot of. So I'm guessing if I did do this, I'd have to cut down massively on my interaction on other threads. There are going to be times though when I'll be offline (for instance, I have two conferences one in April, one in May, and then a General Assembly in June where I'll be on a committee doing denominational business) and won't be able to respond quickly, but hey I should be able to still reply faster than say Microsoft or the local copier repair people (which reminds me, I have to contact the copier repair people again)

I guess if it would be profitable to others I'm willing to invest the time, if its not then I'll give it a miss.

I personally wouldn't.

When you start having serious discussions about religion it seems to bring out all the rude and obnoxious nutcases.

It's one of the reasons you don't see Kieran here or AGW anymore.

I sure wouldn't put it in the OC.

Maybe, just maybe, if Skuzzy would give you a "Religion" forum, but I sort of doubt he would.

Perhaps the best solution is "PM the Pastor".  ;)

Guilty as charged. :(

However, I'm looking around at a Nation that has become over the course of the last 200 years an increasingly secular one. And, I have questions, concerns, worries about what it all means for our society..  the good and the bad.

One guy on TV last night actually asked the President if he thought we were facing Armegeddon fer cripes sake!

Anyway, if yah do this Seagoon, you could do the world some good; I can't see as how it could do any of us any harm.

The blessings of an agnostic be upon you; either way. :aok

See what I mean.

It's not that people should not be passionate about how they feel.  There is a difference between being passionate and just flat out disrespectful.  A sure sign of disrespect?
When you find you have nothing positive to add to the thread, so you post to it anyway, knowing full well it serves no purpose than to piss people off.

Or worse, you have no clue that it will piss people off and you just laugh about it.

My apologies for the hijack Seagoon.  I'll get off my soapbox.

Well certainly if Skuzzy is dead-set against it, then that would be the end of the idea. As for a dedicated "religion" sub-section, that would obviously be out of place on the AH BB.

There do seem to be a lot of people in the AH community with big questions, "ultimate questions" so to speak, and not many people they know or trust who they can talk about them with. I don't know that people here necessarily trust me but after several years of posting, at least they sort of know me and hopefully know I don't mind people asking.

I'd prefer if the asking and answering was done in public whenever possible, if only to avoid reduplication of effort, because I don't really have time to answer the personal email I get already, and because you never know what might be helpful to other people (heck, sometimes neither do they, often we simply don't even know where to begin).

I suppose one of the major problems might be people simply trying (consciously or not) to get the thread locked and because the O' Club is viewed by many as a verbal furball.

Anyway, you guys decide, if there is more pro than con, for a dedicated thread I'll go with it and see whether its viable. If it's just another flame fest, I'll can it myself.
