Blue Screen of Death, Interruptions since patch
« on: March 22, 2006, 05:26:30 PM »
Greetings,

As the subject says, since version 2.07 there is a driver that is incompatible with AH2 and causing BSOD and lockups.  I am in the process of documenting sofware as I remove it to see what can be causing these complete system reboots and lockups.   These problems started since the latest version 2.07 patch 1.

I am using sound from the abit motherboard.   As usual, any clues are appreciated.

Regards,

Malta

p.s. As a note, I am running an AMD 3700+ processor and motherboard combination instead of intel.

A guess;  Video card/driver related, but without knowing what video card it remains a guess.

Hi Skuzzy,

The video card is a Gigabyte 6800GT, model GV-NX68T256D-B.   I disabled all the startup programs and that seemed to help.  I will try enabling each program, one at a time, and see if I can figure out which one is causing the problem.  The motherboard is an abit AN8 and it is not particularly friendly with the Nvidia 6800GT card for some reason.  If the machine is turned off for a while in the winter, it has to warm back up before the card will initalize.  It's a fairly well known problem.

I'll pay attention to what is happening.  If I figure out what seems to be causing this problem I'll certainly post what I find.

Thanks,

Malta

Found a way to hang AH2 100% of the time:

Start AH, go offline, exit, go online and program hangs when loading files at "Terrain Complete".     If I don't go offline first, AH2 loads properly.   I have to wonder if part of this has to do with the AMD processor.

I had the video settings at 1280x1024, 512 texture size, preload in system memory,  preload skins, hardware vertex preocessing, optimize object, optimize terrain, 60 fps.   Based on your suggestion I set about changing these settings.  In changing the video settings, the 1024x768 resolution came up with the 1024 texture size.

I selected that resolution, the program went through an initialization, and then going from offline to online caused no program hang! I changed the texture size from 512 to 1024, set the frame rate to unlimited, removed preload in memory and preload skins, and the hanging problem seems to have gone away!  I am running 1280x1024 resolution.  The texture size change seems to have made all the difference.

The 1280x1024 resolution setting is not displayed when video settings are selected, which looks like there may be an issue there.   I never set the resolution to 1024x768 before now because of the LCD 1280x1024 monitor on this machine.  Maybe that was the problem.

Thanks for the extremely good clue!!
