New computer, zillion problems

New computer: TONS of problems!

Windows XP Media Center Edition, version 2002, sevice pack 2

HP Pavilion

AMD Athlon 64x2 dual core 4200+

984 Mhz, 960 mb RAM

ATI Radeon Xpress 200

DX 9.0c

First Problem: CH USB stick, pedals and throttle

Second problem: Aces High and maybe the dual core thing

My well-working computer is in the shop; I went out and bought a new

box off the rack so I could play Aces High 2 during spring break. I

talked to Roy in Grapevine, spent an hour with a tech from CH, and

talked to 3 guys in India.

The tech from CH figured there was a problem with the USB controller

chip or driver, so I returned the computer and got this replacement.

Same CH problems: It finds the new hardware; if I restart the computer

it won't find the hardware unless I pull out all the USB wires and plug

them into different ports. Of course, then I have to remap everything

in Aces High 2. When I use the CH Control manager, the machine will

find new hardware 6 times, then all devices are completely lost in the

game controllers window. I should mention that I've had no problem programming the CH manager in the past.

Dual core thing and Aces High: In the hangar (for instance) the page of

the clipboard that lists planes will continuously spin around 360

degrees. Of course if I go on the runway, the views flip around, I get

the don't move controls so rapidly, and the plane crashes. I tried

disabling one and the other cores as per the Hints and Tips post in the

tech forum. That didn't work and if I restart the computer, both cores

are re-enabled anyway.

There must be some simple little setting somewhere that fixes all this,

and I'll remind you that I've gone through 2 new computers with these

problems.

Thanks for your help.

You might try a powered USB hub for your CH gear.  I have all 3 plus a MS FF plugged into one hub with no problems.

If the information in ths sticky is not correct as to how to disable one of the cores, would one of you, who do have a dual core AMD CPU please review and see where I went wrong?

It is imperative one of the cores be disabled or you will have no end of problems with XP.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Aces High will run the first time it loads after a boot-up so I am disabling the core at that time; and had a two hour AH session today.

Using the powered USB hub also worked, and will assist greatly in my CH controller workaround.

Funny, everyone always told me the CH gear needed 3 separate USB ports on the machine, maybe because I'm avoiding the Control Manager.

Anyway, things seem to be going fairly well.

Thanks again.

The CH products might actually draw to much power if connected to the same USB hub.  Reason for 3 different ones is required.  Most USB ports are rated for 500ma.
