Mattresses?

the Shrew says the trusty old water bed must go, she's thinking of either an air (like Sleepnumber) or a memory foam type (to go in the old frame)... Have any of ya had experience with either of those?

One thing to consider about the memory foam.

My wife suffers from Fibromyalgia which leaves mostly her shoulders very sensitive to touch. Well those spots are also colder, memory foam gives more where its warm, less where its cold.  I think she'd of actually been in less pain if I'd beat her with a baseball bat.

So if you have poor circulation, athritis, fibro, etc you may want to consider another choice.

On the air bed, fine when they are new. But as soon as they develop a pinhole or two you have the pump starting & stopping off & on all night.  Bothers some, may not others.

We had water bed for years, got to be just too much hassle too often.
Seemed like we had leaks or problems a couple times a year.

Took us a while to adapt, but we sleep well now on a standard mattress & box spring.

The following is my opinion only;

Air Beds = leak.

Electric air pumps to keep bed inflated = fail, when you need sleep the most.

"Space-type Swedish NASA Foam" = 3 times the money, for the same bed.

When I last purchased, I spent a bunch of time researching.  Even found a guy handmaking custom mattresses in Philly!  I found that the pillow-tops are comfortable looking, but that pillow-top will crush in a relatively short time (I expect a mattress to last 15+ years).  Furthermore, those silly 2-foot-thick mattresses are crazy hard to find linens for, and said linens will be far more costly than they should be.

I finally bought a top-line Stearns & Foster, standard construction, padded, but no pillow-top.  I put it in a beautiful Victorian replica bed (5 years before they showed up in the damn stores), and I have never been more pleased with how I spent my money.  It's amazingly comfortable, durable, and stays looking great with just a thrice-yearly turn.

I'd say...stick to the traditional construction, and a reputable name.  Once you've narrowed it down, shop pricing, warranties and quality of service.  Be careful, a lot of these dealers are trash, and not to be dealt with.

Put your money in traditional quality, and do business with a reliable, etsablished and reputable dealer...you'll still be glad of the purchase years from now.

Good Luck!

Dred, did you consider that maybe you were wetting the bed?  Normally, we advise those who complain of repeated "leaks" to look closely for any circular yellow stained areas on the sheets - that usually solves the problem.  The medical term for this is Notknowpeepeeosis

I am a very big fan of water beds. I have never slept better than when on the "old plain bag of water". Since that isn't an option with the RV we have gone through 4 mattress's. The one that came with our latest rig was a memory foam unit. It seemed nice but I was getting my back twisted up every night. Going to a chiropractor was not a good deal 3 times a week. The foam mattress was also very very warm and I hate trying to sleep in a hot environment.

We finally went out and looked at some mattress stores. We found a moderately firm pillow top that fit us reasonably well. Do I still miss my water bed, absolutely, but this was the best compromise we could find and I don't need a chiropractor wevery week.

Go out lookat several stores. Don't think that high price means good results any more than very cheap will. Compare several brands and firmness levels as well as pillow top or not.

I just bought a new king size King Koil memory foam pillowtop mattress from Sleep Experts. Yeah, it's one of those uber thick jobs, but I had no problem buying linens for it at Bed, Bath and Beyond.

Best bed I've ever slept on, including waterbeds.

They just opened a Sleep-By-Number store in one of our larger malls here.  I checked them out and the salespeople strike you as pushy AMWAY folks, trying to get you to fill out credit apps.  The beds look and seem nice...as they should at $2200.  Accessories were phenomenally expensive...$99 pillows seemed to be everywhere.

While Im sure they are a truly spectacular bed, I wonder what happens 3-5 years later when the electrical pump fizzles from a power surge.  Or if the bed air baffle gives out after a drunken quest of bringing home all the Hooters Gals  :)

The memory foam (Posturpedic) is another story.  That foam eventually goes flat.  And furthermore, since when do astronauts have beds in space?  I thought that gravity thing meant they just strapped into a wall and snoozed?  So this "space research" stuff sounds silly.

The only memory foam thing I have is a pillow I bought two weeks ago.  it took a few nights to adjust to it but it seems to be better than those wavy-shaped foam things.  And its heavy, so if ever in a pillow fight, I have the nuclear bomb!  :D

Thus far, I've checked out a few King_Size Sealy's and the rest of the traditional mattresses.  I havent made a decision yet but like you, its funny to hear and see the advertising.

The pushy sales technique of the Sleep By Number folks zapped them from the equation for me.

I've slept on the sleepnumber bed a few times in hotels, was never very impressed.

I got a pillowtop mattress for about $600. I added a feathertop onto it that my g/f got me for valentine's day. I don't have a boxspring, just a regular metal framed sleigh style bed. I've never slept better.
