Embry Riddle..??
« on: January 29, 2001, 02:46:00 AM »
Has anyone attended this university?
I'm thinking about joining. Ive heard its the best; but I have a few doubts I dont want to ask their administration (the probably full of toejam)

1.) Are there chicks there?
2.) Are they many and hot?
3.) What planes they fly in Riddle? and I dont mean what planes they have to show off, wich ones the fly more constantly.
4.) Is it demanding? I can study a few hours a week, but I just cant be a bookworm. I hate studying. I'm a man of action.
5.) Will they give me priority for my private lisence?
6.) Anything else you may add?

I MAY join the ROTC for some esconomic help; and I am also thinking joining the army or marines to become a gunship pilot. I'd love to be a fighter pilot, but my eyesight wont do.

Thanks for the info.

I'm pretty sure there are some AHer's who have been to Embry-Riddle. In the meantime, the school has a good reputation here in Florida. My associate who went there said that he obtained his ratings - private, instrument, commercial multi-eng, and instructor very quickly. The weather in winter is great for flying, and pretty good in summer too, but with thumper bumpers every afternoon in July and August. You can fly just about every day. They do give some help finding a job in aviation. My buddy instructed for a while but didn't make enough money so he changed fields entirely. The son of a woman I know went to Embry-Riddle, and the next time I heard about him, he was in Alaska hauling passengers in multi-engined turbo prop jobs.

I think it costs some serious money, so most students have thier noses to the grindstone. I personally wouldn't go there unless I was ready to eat it, sleep it and breath it.

I assume the aircraft they operate is the usual Pipers and Cessnas with top-echelon maintainance.

As for hot babes, I think you could meet a few on Daytona Beach

Check out the ComAir academy in Orlando too.

It's not a "degree" type school though. It's just a fast flying course with links to the commuter lines. You'll probably still need a degree to eventually get on with a major.

Embry Riddle has a major campus in Northern Arizona at Prescott. Flying is conducted about 360+ days a year. There are women in the program but they are there to get an education as they know they are working uphill against the traditional system.

If you want to party I suggest you pick a state university with low tuition costs that has the reputation for a party school. There are some publications that list the "party schools" and the education is a secondary matter to quite a few of the students. Many of the women there are interested in finding a rich husband rather than classes so there will be plenty of opportunities to sample the pond. Costs will still be substantial as you will be an out of state student which means higher tuition.

If you want a serious aviation education Embry Riddle is the way to go. It will cost you in money and work to get through it. With the current shortage of pilots for the major and minor airlines there will be work, but they are FAR from desperate and won't be interested in a party animal. I have 3 friends who either just got in the airlines  system or are finishing preparation now.

The military angle can get you some bucks for 4 years but only if you rate a scholarship. If you go ROTC and do not get the scholarship you will only get paid for the last two years of college or in ROTC as you may finish it before your degree. You will not be paid for more than the months in school (9) during those two years. There will be a "summer boot camp" between your junior and senior years in ROTC and you will get paid for that 6 weeks (approximate time) at the rate of a buck Sgt. (E-5). The ROTC program is not a "shoe-in" for actual service in the military. Several cadets have been washed out and given unflattering discharges. That can impact your entire life and career choices severely. In my class back in 1975 I saw a brand new Second Lieutenant nearly get a Court Martial. A Marine First Lieutenant did get washed out of the school he was attending and the letter from the post Commander to his chain of command sealed his career chances. He was an ok student but he decided to "party" next to the Commanding General's daughter and made some rather "indelicate" remarks to her. I know about it as I was there at the time and had to do a sworn statement as to what I saw and heard in the O-Club. The behavior the Lt. exhibited was sufficient to get him out of the school and off post inside of 48 hours with an official reprimand in his personnel jacket for "conduct unbecoming an Officer".

Flying programs in the military are VERY competitive. It will cost you again in work to get it. You can skate along in ROTC, a bit, but not if you want the flight options.

Please think about what your goals are and decide what you should do about them. The opportunities are there but the competition is as well.

Animal! I'm thinking of going there too! I just had a conversation about that school with my dad. I plan on going either there, the AF Academy, or UCF (nearby). I'll probably be visiting the school over the weekend.

Seems like I remember the ComAir deal is beneficial, as they are looking to get your ratings and into a commuter job asap. The majors are very short of pilots, so getting in a program and getting out and flying fast is key. No doubt it is going to be VERY costly. And then plan on starving for a few years flying. Oh, and Guntr, I believe the maintenance on those school planes are by the students helped by a few full time guys. That's scary.

Also, remember in the world of mergers and aquisitions, ya might want to shoot for flying for 1 of the big 3...meaning getting a job at American Eagle or United Express other than another carrier would best put you in a transfer positon to a bigger, more stable major airline.

I went to Spartan School of Aeronautics, kinda Embry-Riddles competitor for the amt program, and can assure you it's a whole lota hype and 10X the cost. Find a good local program and just get them hours if ya can. (my opinion) I work with guys who spent like $700 at a community college to get their airman certificate, where's mine cost more like $15,000. And that was in 1985.

Im not sure about the girls working uphill against the traditional system Mav. I asked a F/O on a 757 to motor the #2 engine so i could leak check a chip detector O ring and she didn't know how. Im not toejamtin you, so they aren't getting in the majors by sure brillance. We have lotsa female pilots. Might even be a edge in getting a job.

As far as wonding about shagging them Animal, go ahead. I'll take care of your girlfriend REALLY good. heh

You'll never make it Animal, I think hanging out of a helicopter wildly shooting at things fits you much better. Offer still stands on yer old lady though.

Mav, thanks for the info.

I was kidding about the par-té; but of course I also want to have fun. But if I go there, I go to give my best. I am a darned good pilot and I wont waste my time; I rather spend it showing them what I can do.

Does anyone know what the average rate they charge for acrobatic classes around that area? I also want to get an acrobatic rating soon. I want to work on that if possible.

Tac, If I go there, you bet I will drop by.

Frosty, if you go to the Riddle, let me know so if I decide to go too, we can get in touch.

Animal,

There is a good aerobatic school in Chandler.  About 2 hour drive or a 45 minute flight from Embry Riddle in Prescott. They have a web site. I'll look for the address for you. You should be able to get tail wheel endorsement at the same time. I am not sure if there are any farther north in AZ. though.

Mav

Web address is: http://www.aerobatics.com/home.html

Look them over.

Animal, I had a flight instructor who was an Embry-Riddle grad... he told me about this killer punch they used to make; mostly clear alcohols, and just a touch of Curacao to give it that light, light blue tint.

They called it "100 low-lead". (aviation fuel for those who don't know)

Sounds like a great school to me.
