LVT or LST with the fleets
« on: March 31, 2006, 08:26:53 AM »
Could we get these ships to go with the fleet?  As long as they are up, fleets have troops & supplies available.  If they are sunk, troops & supplies go away.  Kind of like hitting barracks on land bases.

From another thead, here's my idea...

I like it, Frank3! While we're at it, I'd love to see the addition of an LST, which would ground itself on the beach and act as a temporary spawn point for tanks and other GVs. Perhaps make it necessary to bring a fleet to within a few miles of the beach, then click on the map where you want the LST to beach itself. It would then detach from the fleet, run into the beach and land, opening it's bow doors and making it active. After some set time, if it is not destroyed it disappears, to respawn with the fleet. It would be analgous to the GV hanger on fields/bases (and a tempting target to hit, preventing amphib assaults until the rebuild time has passed). It could have some auto-AAA, as well as some man-able defensive guns.

For the GV guys and base capture players this would be a great tool.

This exact idea was proposed in the Gameplay Request forum over a year ago.  Unfortunatly since that forum was deleted we can't search out the old discussion.  Anyway the eventual conclussion was the LSTs were never used for combat landings, they only came in after the initial landings had been made.  Although I still think it would be cool to be able to use an LST as basically a mobile VH.

While it's true that historically the LSTs/LSDs did not approach the beach until a secure beach head was established, that does not automatically preclude its inclusion in AH.

A) We often use hardware in non-historical ways in AH (the fleets in AH are themselves the quintessential example).  In any event, it would be a big, slow target that could be taken out with GV or shore battery fire if you attempt to beach it too close to enemy guns.  If all such opposition is already destroyed, than the landing is for all intents and purposes un-opposed.

B) It makes sense to separate the spawning of boats/gvs from the CV to a separate platform, i.e. the LST/LSD.  This would mean the a/c hanger (i.e. the CV) and the GV hanger (i.e. the LST) would provide a separately targetable object, and would be more analogous to land bases.  In fact, I believe we should also add a Liberty ship to the fleets, which would house the troops and fuel (and perhaps ammo) for the fleets, each of which could be destroyed individually in the same manner as the radar and AAA guns of a fleet.

I like where your going with that idea sabre.

Seperate liberty ships for each of the ord/fuel/troops functions would be a good thing.
