I think the Russians have the right idea. I don't understand why NASA doesn't offer the same thing. If NASA had its budget cut in half I bet they would change their tune.

If some billionaire wants to spend 20 million on a joy ride, I say let him. He waived all liability rights anyhow, so what's the big deal.

 I've got mixxed feelings on it.  On one hand I'm happy that a civilian is finaly up there.  That's historical and promising.  On the other hand I don't like that the Russians are treating the station like it's there's and they can do what ever they want with it.  I wonder if they'll give NASA any of the cash?  Or if NASA will have a bill for the dude when he gets back. ie. 10 million for O2 and another 10 million for the nitrogen  

 If the Russians want to capitalize on space they should have done it in MIR or build their own damn station, not on "ours" or they should give us 75% of the cash because we paid for most of the damned thing in the first place.

 Then there's the whole thing that Russia out "capitalized" us

I 100% support Tito and I am very, very happy that he is up there.

However, I dont like that Russia kept all the $20mil when its supposed to be an international station.

The should have given a small ammount to all the other countries. Not half of the $20 of course, but a small ammount; just to be representative that they are ALL in it together.

I do believe the Ruskies deserve 90% of the money, since they spent a considerable ammount on training for him, and launching a person to space is nothing cheap.

Animal, the Russians keep the $20 mil, because none of the other space programs wants to have such a policy.  They only allow it because the Russians assserted their right to put up whomever they want.  Besides, their space program really needs the money, and unlike int'l "charity" funds, this dough has no strings attached.

The thing is that the russians actually "sold" their technology so that they could be part of the ISS program.

The US didn't give them the money they needed to build their modules for nothing, u know... the russians were far more advanced in Energy management and Life Support systems... soooo the US bought the technology.

(US has the money, Russia has the expertise in Space Life Support and Europe... well we still have the best GEO Launchers   )

So now they want to make a hotel in their "sovereign space"... no big deal if it doesn't interfere with the rest of the activities on the station.

One thing that you may not know is that International Space Law states that the russian modules are actually "russian ground", so the US have little if nothing to say about what happens in there (again, as long as it doesn't interfere with the NASA, NASDA, or ESA modules).

Now, the thing that worries me most is having James Cameron on the ISS... shouting "I'm the king of the... universe!" and things like that...

How can it not?
You have some 200lb billionaire floating around putting his arse in your face.
It isn't like they can send him to the lobby or bar or somewhere out of the way.
I think the  Russians jumped the gun on this one and it was a greed decision.
Glad to see a civilian in space but too early and for the wrong reason.
Heard Marriott is trying to franchise the ISS

Hmm actually they have a Russian module and, from what I've heard from people I know at ESA, if he wants to stroll around the station outside the Russian module he has been asigned to, he has to be authorized by NASA, NASDA and ESA and in company of a NASA astronaut.

So, you see, if he doesn't come out of the russian module, it's highly unlikely to think that the activities outside russian space will be affected in any way.

The point is, while the ISS is a global project, each agency has its own private space, with separate funding and separate uses for their equipment.

If an, let's say, ESA astronaut is to do something inside one of NASA modules, he has to be authorized to do so.

I think it's a step forward to making space popular... now if we could just lower the prices a bit...

Tito space flight was planed for the MIR II, but since MIR II
was canceled, everything was hasty shipped to the ISS.
Many Russian ISS parts were build for the MIR II, some parts
are still having the MIR II label on it

I think it is a great idea.

The more interest the common man(I know he's rich) has in space travel the more money that will go into it and the more likely it will advance faster.
