3DMark lower with 61.77 !?
« on: April 01, 2006, 03:42:28 AM »
Hi,
In process off re-installing computer.
(MOBO and Power died)

I have now Ahtlon 2800XP, GF FX 9500 Ultra, VIA KY400 chipset.

I have installed (in order):
- XP
- VIA Hyperion chipset drivers.
- XP SP2
- VIA USB 2.0 drivers
- all the windows updaes (critical, windows, drivers)
- VIA

So I figure that I do a benchmark test with 3DMark 2005 1.2.0.

I get a score of 1215 :(

But have not installed NVidia drivers yet (just the Microsoft drivers)

After installing 61.77 drivers (the version I think is recomended by Skuzzy for old video cards) the 3DMark score is LOWER ?!!?

Is this normal ?

Is there some tweak I need to do to get more speed out of this thing?

The 61.77 drivers work best for the older 5XXX series cards (5200, 5500 etc).

I'm not sure which drivers work best for your card, but
I am pretty sure the 61.77 drivers won't be the best option for you.

I'm not familiar with a GF FX 9500. You sure it's not an ATI 9500 card instead?

cheers,

In Windows System Information it is listed as NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900 Utlra.

I have had it for 2-3 years.

I have had problems in AH2 with it, in past computers, and recal advice from skuzy to install 61.77.

But now it seems the Microsoft driver is as good so maybe I should just go with that?

(Had to re-install XP a thrid time today :( and have not installed other drivers yet.)

Stone, as far as I know the 61.77 drivers are the recommended drivers for your card.

As far as getting better performance out of the drivers you currentyly have installed, I have no advice for you. Rapidly getting out of my knowledge base here.

anyone else?

Skuzzy?

cheers,

I  wouldnt put to much stock in 3dmark numbers , they usually dont reflect real game performance.   I think Star did a test with that same card awhile ago , and found instablity with newer drivers. I'd do  a search thou .

Here it is , make sure to read threw the whole thing as star does some long term testing for stabilty http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=150323

Note that both nvidia and ati tailor their drivers to make them "bench" better, but this doesn't actually mean they are any better. 61.77 drivers (older than the most recent drivers) probably have less "bench enhancing" code. The card itself probably won't do any worse.

The PC works beter with the 61.77 compared to Microsoft drivers even in Windows, so I use 61.77.

Unfortunately, you cannot use any 3DMark score to compare dirver performances.  ATi and NVidia will and do optimize thier drivers specifically for 3DMark.  And what is good for 3DMark is not really good for any other real world application on the market.
