Child Molester Cop Walks

A former Runaway Bay Police Officer and Wise County Sheriff Deputy pleaded guilty this week to sexual assault in exchange for 10 years deferred adjudication and a $1,000 fine.

James Anderson “Jay” Thompson, 27, of Perrin was arrested last April after a 14-year-old Bridgeport High School student said Thompson sexually assaulted her.

According to the arrest affidavit, the victim said she had been sexually assaulted by Thompson at her sister’s home in Runaway Bay in January of 2005.

Thompson was a police officer in the city at the time of the offense. He had resigned about one month before his arrest.

Last November, Thompson was indicted by a Wise County grand jury on three counts of sexual assault.

On Monday, Thompson’s plea bargain was accepted by Judge John Fostel in 271st District Court in Decatur.

“If a child sex case gets probated as part of a plea bargain, the only type of probation allowed by law is deferred adjudication,” District Attorney Jana Jones explained in an e-mail.

Because Thompson was a law enforcement officer, Jones recused herself from the case. Denton attorney Cary Piel was appointed to be special prosecutor in the case.

According to the terms of the agreement, Thompson must register as a sex offender. Other terms of his community supervision include surrendering his peace officer license, not associating with people with felony records, performing 240 hours of community service and regular drug and alcohol testing. Thompson is also not to have any contact with children under 17 without an approved chaperone and cannot have any contact with the victim.

Jones said that Thompson must register as a sex offender for life, even if he does not violate the terms of his probation.

I wonder if he had been anything but a cop if they would have thrown him this bone. 3 counts and he walks away with a slap on the wrist.

DELAWARE, Ohio -- A former Central Ohio police officer was sentenced Monday for having sex with two teenage girls.

Edsil Spence pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawful sexual contact with a minor and one count of gross sexual imposition.

"I did disgrace my badge, and I did wrong," Spence said.

Spence resigned as a Genoa Township police officer in November.

"He used his position as a police officer to get her in a car," a victim's relative said. "Enticed her with paying her under the table $10 an hour, which he did and he even did the night that he raped her so that mom wouldn't ask questions, paid her like a common potato."

He was sentenced to 8½ years in prison.

While he's congratulating himself on beating the rap, he'd better be watching his back...

With him being a cop, it's my opinion that he be punished even beyond the norm.  Abusing a child's trust in authority, under color of the law, is beyond explanation, and deserves a special form of retribution.

Best outcome?  Put Ex-Officer Way-to-Friendly in prison, in general population.  That way, he'd be the two most popular kind of guys in the joint, all in one easy-to-peel package.

Theres a flipside to this story (if it had been a chick copy grabbing a 14 y/o boys butt then it would've been a big laugh...).

Habe you guys followed that blonde chick in Florida?  If a woman molests a teenage boy, they feign mental illness and away they go, free of jail.  If a male does much the same, most of the time they see lots of jail time.

Seems to me the prosecutors need to be more even handed in the punishments they dish out for the same crime.

It isn't the cop RPM, gifted he’s a piece of garbage and I hope he gets what’s coming to him - Its [Blank] [Blank] Activist Judges - It's almost become an epidemic now within the judicial system regarding child molestation cases nationwide. They don’t believe in imprisonment – they seem to think it’s a “Disease” and can be cured with treatment. Are they going to start letting the murder’s go soon and call that a disease because they’re letting the rapists slide now. That’s why I’m all for Jessica’s Law (After Jessica Lunsford – girl who was killed in Florida by repeat child molester) - Mandatory 25 year sentence on the first offense. Sorry – no plea bargains piece of garbage – go rot in a cell! You've got the case in Vermont where Judge Edward Cashman sentences the defendant to 60 days in jail for raping a young girl for 4 years straight (Age 6 to 10). Then you have Judge John O’Connor in Ohio sentences a multiple child molester to probation. My biggest question is where are all the Libs on this? Aren’t they big victim rights activists? Aren’t these girls victims here? Where’s the women’s rights groups screaming foul on this one? Now pass me one of those cubans you got there so I can enjoy my vent along with some Glennfiddich.

The Deputy Press Director for Homeland Security was today arrested for solicting sex from a minor. Gotta be good for probation and a winky nod from the judge when that makes it to court.

Sad thing is, this is a highly conservative county with conservative judges and procecutors. He was given the plea bargain because he was a cop. The plea bargain opened the loophole that allowed him to walk. Yeah, I bet nobody thought of that beforehand. Sure he lost his license, but wait and see, he'll pop up working in some capacity that does not require one.

I still only see a 'sexual assault' charge, which could be nothing more than a slap on the backside - a far cry from kiddy fiddling.
