Screen Freeze as I take the Runway
« on: April 08, 2006, 06:29:21 PM »
Ok, my new computer is up and running. I got everything loaded in it and it seems to be running fine. Until I get into AH2. I can get to the runway and she locks up with a reset of the computer required to get going again.

Here's what I'm working with.

Via chipset P4 3.4 GHZ CPU w/800 FSB (FSB prolly means diddyl to AH2)
1 GB PC4200 DDR2 (533 RAM - 2 sticks of 512)
SB Live Sound Card (for the game port)
ATI 9800 PRO AGP Video Card.
Im running XP Pro SP2.

Game setttings are 1024X780 with 512 vid textures.
FR shows 85 in the tower.
Online or offline makes little difference.

So far I've found I had the on board sound (realtek) and SB Live running at the same time. I went into the BIOS and turned of the on board sound.

I did a "run" and went to dxdiag. In there I turned sound accel down to 3/4 speed. Did a sound/vox check all is well. I had heard SB Live might need an update/patch. I'll talk a look on Creatives support page.

Hmmmm, I wonder if I'm getting an on board vid/ATI vid card conflict. I'll go have a look at that, also.

Ideas?

Thanks,

Ren

Try changing  the video textures to 1024.  Video texture was giving me weird problems at 512 in my most recent machine.  You may also want to try changing other video settings (such as the memory preloads) and see if they make a difference.

try 128 textures with sliders about half way in the game and vsync on, AA 4x, and AF off(programm pref), limit FR to 60 - u don't need anymore

with textures at 128, you can preload them into video memory on the ati 9800 (128 meg ram)

Thanks for the help. Will try some changes and see what happens.

Actually, I just pulled every card out of the PCI slots and tried firing up the game with just the video card plugged in to make sure its not some sort of sound card/driver issue. I also unistalled the programs. I have dx running at 3/4 and got the freeze again. I think I have dx9.0c installed and it might not be the correct version? If its not Im wondering how to unistall it. I thought they did away with possible uninstall options.

Yes, I think you're right but it might also be 64bit which I'm not quite sure is AH2 compatable. Not sure.

Thanks

Ren, as I mentioned in the emaillist, we both have nearly identical setup except for the pentium  vs my AthlonXP processor,  and I have no trouble preloading the 512 textures on my ATI9800pro AGP card.......

you did not mention you also had onboard video integrated before, that could be causing a conflict....... also the update you mentioned regarding the SB live soundcard.......

I use the 4.12 drivers for my card, no issues, I use only the gameport for my SB soundcard, and use onboard AC97 sound,  my audiophile card is only used when I am playing around with cubbase/protools etc...... is disabled the rest of the time......

check your voltage to your  videocard?  make sure your powerplug is getting a solid conection to the 9800 pro vid card......?

make sure you have integrated video disabled , and make sure you do not have any unnecessary registry entrys for the integrated video, that would conflict with the ATI agp card.......

It worked before, so try and check your directx version, to confirm if it is the 64bit version or the 32bit version, was not aware of this during the email discussion , as well.......

as for y 75mhz refresh, that is what my Monitor allows as default for that resolution 1024x768, I can tweak it, but I see no difference in 80 or 85....... I was not saying set your refresh to 75 as I have mine there.

as for 512 and preloading mem, I have no issues, and if I recall you had no issues either in the past.......

hope we can help ya get it all straightened out ( sure we can, simplest things are most overlooked ones ) :)

If ya can't get in the game, at least check out the Films section Ren.

Threads called "Carrier Sortie" .

You are a movie star.:D
Thank you for helping and showing me a few things about CV landings.

About your problem.
I would be doing the same thing you're doing right now.
Then I'd go for a reformat and only install the minimum hardware necessary to run AH.

One time I went through 7 motherboards because I found them to be incompatible with my various hardware.  Harddrive wouldnt be seen, video not coming up, sound would not work at all, stuff like that.  I finally said screw it and bought the 2nd most expensive motherboard fry's had.

Thanks, Kermit....

Every thing works absolutely perfectly cept getting in the game.... ARGH!!!

Right now I'm thinking it has to do with the ATI or DirectX drivers. Everything is out of the MB. Heck, i don't even know if it has anything to do with hyperthreading. I turned it off to checck...no change. Still troubleshooting....

Eventually, I'll get to the films and have a looksee. I'm glad you got the film up. Weren't you doin it for yer squadies?

Hmmmm, more checking and I'm finding out I get screen freeze when I do a "run-dxdiag" and get into the dx test windows. Anytime I ran any of the test's I'd immediately get a screen freeze and full lockup. I gather it has something to do with the latest version of it. I heard you can't remove dirextX but also heard there is an uninstall program. Maybe I need to get an older version?

I'd do a reformat if possible.  Maybe directx9c didn't install correctly.  Maybe a reinstall of directx is first if possible.  If those dont work, maybe a vid card exchange is next.

Film was about me and a squaddie winging together.

brick32....other than taxes and RL work I'm working feverishly to get back online. If I don't get it by Saturday I'll relight the old Dell for the weekend...

I have the trackIR3 Pro. Did you buy the 4? Mine works fine except for flyin in my reclining rocker. You need to get some sort of stationary seat so your head moves to look around the seat back iso the seat. :) That was the only short coming I've noticed with it. You HAVE to be able to peak around the seatback.
