Story of the bird is in the caption for this profile.  Color shot of the nose on the back of "Air Command".  B&W photos in the 91st BG history.

Yellow codes on the OD/Gray fuselage that replaced the flak damaged fuselage.  Photo of the flak hit in the 91st history too.

Hope this helps.

Actually the real deal still had the original tail, but other than that, the color profile looks cool.

It also looks like it has OD with green patterns on it (rather than solid OD).

Very possible that the later tail was added at some point.  The plane the AH B17 is skinned as, "A bit o Lace" had the original tail and then was retrofitted with the Cheyenne tail.

Nice image you posted Krusty.  Where'd you find that one?  Profile I posted shows the green splotches to the OD as well.

I found it on ARC. Somebody modeled Little Miss Mischief on a 48th scale Monogram B-17G, and they mentioned toward the end that they found a photo of the real thing after they had already put the Cheyenne tail on. I saved to desktop and put on picture hangar so as not to leach.

The "splotches" are usually from re-spraying OD green over patches and repairs. Most OD green B-17s show this to some extent.

Our S-2s and C-1As looked like speckled gulls after a cruise, and that was just from re-spraying areas that were bead blasted to remove surface corrosion. Bead blast, alodine, prime and spray. Many small touch-ups were done with simple spray cans.

I don't think that's it entirely, Widewing. There is a camo scheme for B17s that has specific "tiger stripes" (my name for them) that are a different color of green. They are in certain places and from what I've seen appear to be an intentional pattern.

EDIT: I've seen it mostly on pictures of early Gs or pre-G models.
