Kev, do you have photos showing the wing D-Day stripes covering part of the wing top roundel?  That looks off to me.

Images from Peter Arnold of D-Day Spit Vs.  First shot from the cockpit.  Note where the D-Day stripes end.  The second black stripe extends over the cannon shroud in the photo.  Your skin has the first black stripe in that spot.

Second is a shot of one of the 501 Squadron Spit Vbs. Again, note where the invasion stripes end on the Aileron.  They also started the D-Day stripes further in towards the wing root then you did on the skin.

I know AB910 was flown in those markings as part of the Battle of Britain Flight as obviously she still exists but I haven't seen any images of that Spit with D-Day stripes.

I sure like the idea of the D-Day skinned Vb though :)

Yup Guppy I realise normal was inboard from the roundels.
For some reason thats the way they are shown on the profile. Write-ups on it also mention that this is correct for this particualr aircraft.

D-Day OOB confirms 402 used Vb's on D-Day as part of 11 Group.

Where'd you find the profile and that info on AB910?  It would be interesting to see

It's from eaglestrikeproductions decal makers.
Usually fairly accurate.

http://www.eaglestrikeproductions.com/cgi-bin/amddecals.pl?scale=48&setid=681&dbs=aeromaster&pgs=2&currpg=1&dclimg=ad48681

Click the '2' tab to see where it shows stripes placement.

Does list some references you may have.

Thanks Kev.  Interesting stuff.  I'm going to have to try and find a photo of it.  Gotta be one out there :)

Great work on the Spits as always, and much appreciated by us Spit fans :)

Interesting paragraph in "Spitfire-The Canadians" by Robert Bracken, regarding AB910.

Quoting the pilot who flew it on D-Day, George Lawson  "I recieved a new AE-H, AB910.  This was the aircraft I flew on June 6, 1944.  It became the one I flew regularly.  It was painted up with black and white stripes and it had clipped wings."

No photos however.  Interesting that the decal guys have it full span.

Found an interesting pic of 402sqn in 1945, doesn't show AE-H but a few 'interesting' ones: JEFF, and the one with white tail/spinner-

Looks like they had been re-equipped with LF IX's.

Plus this shows how slap-dash some of the D-Day stripe painting was -

[Edit] AB910 could be the Spit that Margaret Horton (acting as a tailweight) clung onto during a complete flight test circuit.

Another version of "JEFF".  402 got their IXs in July 44 and later transitioned to XIVs in October 44 I believe.

AB910 was the one that Margaret Horton took her ride on btw.
