.AVI Codec
« on: April 11, 2006, 02:29:15 PM »
Topic sounds a bit odd, but for some reason my computer cant play .AVI videos. Sound will play, but I wont see the film. My first thought was that the codec is ruptured or that I dont have one. I've already tried to find one and download it, all without success.

I also attempted opening the .AVI file through Windows Media in hopes that the program would download the codec for me... still no success. I'm running a Windows 2000 SP 4. Any ideas on how / where I can get that codec?

what version of windows media player do you have.

You'll need at least version 9.

I don't believe version 10 supports windows 2000.

You should be able to play avi files with any version of windows media player, but it wouldn't hurt to try to update your media player first.

I have version 9.
EDIT: I downloaded version 9 about 3 months ago. And another thing I forgot to mention, it says just before the music plays: Error Downloading Codec

AVI is the format. Within the format is the codec... this will be something called DivX, or Cinepak, Sorenson, Indeo... any one of a dozen codecs that work within AVI.

This is what the player is looking for. Sound but no video sounds to me like it's missing DivX.

Okay. Yesterday Nemeth sent me a "codec" so I could convert AHII FV films from .ahf mode into .mpeg mode. It was a .dll file named: Divx.dll. Although it never gave me the choice to extract as .mpeg, I did place the file in the system32 and system directories. Think that might have fixed it?

EDIT: WOOPS... Sorry it's named: Xvidcore.dll
Anyone know where I can find the .divx.dll we're talking about?

just download divX or Xvid. go to divx.com and download it. now, it downloads a player too, but you dont need to use that, all you do is run the avi in windows media player after you've installed divx and it will play

Okay, I installed it. Do I need to delete then re-install the current .avi files I have? Cause somehow I feel it has to be downloaded while the codec is active.:aok

Naw, the file is just a file... if you have the correct codec now, it should play fine.

Unless you're talking about a streaming video...?

No. I downloaded the "Wishmaster.avi" file. Still wont play. And a few months back I downloaded a spitfire film which was also a .avi file. It wouldnt play either. Same results, no footage, only music. I thought to myself, "Large filesize just for some music!"

dmf, check out thread called "carrier sortie"

Used windows media player 9 codec.  I like it better than divx.

Well, DivX was the only file with the Div3 codec. That's what was required to play this file....
