Today’s auction find... Japanese hand grenade!

Howdy all! As many of you know I attend a lot of estate auctions. I just look for interesting items. Some I keep, some I sell on ebay… And sometimes things are donated to a museum.

At today’s auction, in a box containing old keys and other junk, I found a large piece of shrapnel, (Still sharp after all these years!)… and… a Japanese Type T99 hand grenade! I was not sure what it was until I got home and looked it up on the Internet. The powder had been dumped, and the fuse burned… But that’s what it is!

I bought my current home from my brother, who had bought it sevral years ago from an elderly couple. I was cleaning out the attic last October and found wrapped in plastic a Series 1 (#46498) Nagoya Arsenal Type 99 Rifle (Japanese).

I went ot hte range a few weeks ago and foun dit quite pleasent to shoot despite the clumsiness of the bolt action.

Would this be the Arisaka Type 99 7.7mm?

It has the Chrysanthemum on the top of the receiver, as well as the Japanese Characters (Type 99),

It has the folding / sliding sight. The stamped serial number on the left side of the receiver is 46498 and the marking (Arsenal Mark) to the right of the serial indicates it was manufactured by Nagoya Arsenal. The serial number range (0-99,999) puts it as a series 1, this is confirmed by the stamped mark left of the serial.

I used the same page you linked (second link in your post) to as a source when looking up the markings.

So it's a Series 1 (#46498) Nagoya Arsenal Type 99 Rifle manufactured before 1943 (folding / sliding sight).

The stock is in decent shape but is worn (nicks, stractches, dings etc...). There was no sling or bayonet with it.

 And I should add... The empty area including the hollow fuse has been filled with a permanent inert substance... So it’s basically just a paperweight. But still pretty interesting.
