Rack Box.......
« on: April 12, 2006, 05:06:28 PM »
I've shuffled around the household boxes and gave my son my gaming rig (lanparty 754/3200+ X800pro etc) and picked up a compaq SR1750NX as a stopgap (planning on using it as a HTPC or giving it to wife later)....the onboard vc isnt bad (xpress 200) {offline framerates in the 38 range at default with 1024 selected}....but obviously not really acceptable so I ordered a XFX GeForce 7900 GT. Now the box has a low watt {but high quality PS}....think its ok to use it or do I need to upgrade?

All in all not a bad box for so cheap (was $640) but got a HP 17in 8ms flatpanel with it (V17e). Has a 3500+ amd chip 1 gig of pc3200 etc + XPMC2005 etc...

Figure I'll swap the 7900 GT back out when I build a better box later this year....have a sceptre 37 in LCD 1080P monitor coming today:) as a new "Desktop"....been very happy with my sceptre 19in for 2 years now.....

From the EVGA Site

Requirements
Minimum of a 400 Watt power supply.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 20  Amps.)

What size is the current PS? Ive seen a few 350W power supplies that are capible of 20A on the 12 rail . If yours is High quality it might make it .

I'd go with an upgrade to the PS. Low voltage situations can cause all kinds of problems, from PS overheating to weird software problems and even wrecking mobos and cards.

Can't be more than 50 bucks or so, it's worth the money if you plan to use it for even a little while. Beats a dead box!

Thanks....

Pretty much confirming what I was thinking....just not worth the potential problem.....
