The following sample math problem was given to students as part of their final exam at Bellevue Community College in Washington State.

-------------
Condoleezza holds a watermelon just over the edge of the roof of the 300 -foot Federal Building, and tosses it up with a velocity of 20 feet per second. The height of the watermelon above the ground t seconds later is given by formula h= -16t2 + 20t + 300

a. How many seconds will it pass her (she's standing at a height of 300 feet) on the way down?

b. When will the watermelon hit ground?

Since it's considering the height 300 to be "ground zero," we need to figure when h = 300 for the first problem.

300 = -16t^2 + 20t + 300 NOTE the caret. You forgot to include that.

It's 300 at t = 0 (the start)

Using the commutative law:

0 = -16t^2 + 20t

16t^2 = 20t

16t^2/t = 20
16t = 20

t = 20/16

t = 5/4

Plugging it back in to the original equation:

h = -16(5/4)^2 + 20(5/4) + 300

h = -16(25/16) + 100/4 + 300

h = -25 + 25 + 300

h = 300

So 5/4ths of a second after she tosses it it will pass her.

The time it takes to hit the ground is the summation of the time it takes to go up, and come down.

I might work on this later.

As I said, I'm not perfect but I try. When I reread, it gets better and you would see that I did correct 'politic' to "politics" without you pointing it out, though I still missed 'sound.'

I correct people whose rhetoric comes across as asinine.  I'm neither conservative  nor liberal. I'm a nihilist and an atheist, a cynic and a skeptic.  When people make a political speech like EN4CER and write it like a high school dropout, I have every right to make a correction. I normally don't give a damn, but political and religious fanatics make me angry, because there's nothing more dangerous.

No, your facts are skewed. The first teacher was found innocent because the kid that taped it took a small portion in isolation of the whole.  Typical of people with political and religious agendas.

When the whole was examined, they found the teacher did give time to both camps.

I double majored in Accounting and Computer Science and found English Literature, Communications, and Intro to Writing to be quite BORING.

I originally took CompSci, but once I got into the field, I found it quite boring as I would accounting. Each is it's own discipline, however, writing and communication is so pervasive in our world, to neglect it is to short change yourself.  I work in IT and I see so much ignorance with regard to good communication skills, it's not even funny.

BTW, my current degrees are English/creative writing and philosophy. I decided to take up the classics because the technical is BORING.

Yeah, sry. Getting a little overheated.

I think I remember you from -- sheesh, what was it? -- 3-4 years ago? When did HiTech rollout the new version?

I flew under a different name then, but I won't bring that up. That persona is dead.

Now to complete this thread hijack.
I have a real problem with some peoples superior attitudes. They like to pick at grammatical and spelling errors as unintelligent.  I could most likely take a small block Chevy engine apart and put it back together, just glancing at torque specs. Does this make me more intelligent  than an English teacher that can't change a flat tire?

Only if you sing the praises of Ford while driving a Kia.

EDIT -- Make that, it's makes you a hypocrite only if you sing the praises of Ford while driving a Kia.

What was the topic again? Oh yeah, dumb liberal teacher can't separate work from politics, and lack of excuses by lefties on this board forces them into attacking the poster...

Welcom back to AH .

I'm really not a pompus a**. I just can't stand it when someone tries to promote one side as more intelligent or better than the other using HS dropout writing skills.

It reeks of Pat Roberts and Osama Bin Laden egotism.

As I said, I'm a nihilist and an atheist, a cynic and a skeptic.  I keep my opinion fair and balanced by labeling all participants as putz's, myself included.

Ah Rip! Another face from the past. I shall shoot you down.

The teacher in the article should lose his job, for the reasons cited and more, but it's EN4CER's presentation that made me shake to the core.  A well written argument is everything in the field of rhetoric.

Well, I started AH with about a week or two left in, AH1's life.  So if it was 3-4 years ago, probably not.

Then again, I flew with this handle in AW on occassion, so who knows.
