Joystick problem?
« on: April 14, 2006, 10:07:29 AM »
When I look at my rudder and elevators rearward while moving the joystick around, it looks like someone with really bad palsy is holding the stick, they wobble and jiggle all over.  Is this an input problem or normal behavior?

I'm using a MS FF Sidewinder Pro.

TIA

No, it isn't normal.  Your contol surfaces should look as smooth as the movement of your stick.

It sounds like your stick is spiking.  Look at your stick outputs and see it you are seeing the same spikes.  A quick fix would be to move the dampening slider up a bit and it should help.

It's very spiky, actually all three axes, except when its in the deadband.

The damping setting does nothing... I think that just slows dows very large movements.

Oh well, I'll take apart the SW stick and if I break it I'll go get an X52 or something.

Thanks for the help.

I thought the MS Sidewinder had optical sensors?.  If they are optical, maybe they can be blown off, or if they are pots, you could try contact cleaner.

Either way, if it's that bad, it can hurt to take a look.  Good luck.

I opened it up and looked, they're optical, I wiped the LEDs and the sensor off with an alcohol wipe, cleaned up the inside and put it back together, no improvement. Might be the increased clock speed of the PCI bus.  Who knows.

In any case I'm on the market for a new joystick just as soon as I can figure out how to sneak it past the wife.
