a week of heck with 2 L's
« on: April 18, 2006, 04:58:17 PM »
A week ago monday I got a call at 2:34 in the morning. The hangar was on fire. (we share a building with an auto detailing shop and that's where the fire started).

We lost a whole pile of maintenance records, helicopter parts and tools, and 2 helicopters. One only had 75 hrs TSN on it, the other only 300 hrs.

We also lost the hangar. Luckily we were the victims and not the cause, and insurance will take care of the losses. Nobody was hurt, another good thing.

A week of 12 to 14 hour days ensued to recover what records we could and piece the company back together. Fortunately we keep copies of just about everything, but still a daunting task.

We are going to survive it.

So I take a couple of days off, and have to report to my M.O. about some blood tests he had taken from me 2 weeks ago. Seems my cholesteral level is through the roof.

He's given me 30 days to improve it, given me a list of things I can't eat and a list of things I can eat. The list of things I can eat is much smaller.

Keeee-rist, all this time I though toast was just what you used to hold the butter.

Oh, but the good news is...I can eat as much tofu as I want. Tofu???  Tofu is soylent green!

So, if I don't get it down to at least a tolerable level in 30 days, he's going to stick me on some kind of pills. He figures if I don't get a grip on it right now, I'm going to turn into a ticking time bomb in short order.

Now, to put the capper on my week, looks like I'm going in for surgery maybe next month to refix my busted up leg again.

And that was the week that was.

"So, other than that Mrs. Kennedy, how did you like the parade?"

I need a vacation :(

Toad has a lot of good info on lowering cholesterol.  I've completely redone my diet, lots of omega-3's (walnuts, fish oil suplements, etc) and searched a lot of sites on what foods boost the good, lower the bad, etc.

My Dr put me on Lipitor for a while.  I went way way down (148) but I started to have muscle aches in my neck, shoudlers and pec muscles.  All known side effects (muscle aches).  I test again in 4 weeks and the Dr said if I can keep it "normal" my way, then great.  Otherwise, we can explore other non-statin options.

This site is an excellent resources on the health benefits of various foods.

Hope that helps.  You didnt say how high you were but it runs above normal in my family (225-240).  Aint heredity a beeouch?

RTR,

The two "smallest change in lifestyle" things you can do to lower cholestrol significantly are:

1. Take a tablespoon of psyillium fiber every day. Psyillium fiber is available at health food stores and costs about .50 a day. Or you can just buy the Sugar Free Metamucil, which is .... psyillium fiber.... at Sam's and take that for about .05 a day. One teaspoon in a glass of water about 15 minutes before every meal. Helps cut your appetite a bit too as it is kinda "filling". Should be good for about a 7% drop in cholesterol all by itself.

2. Plant Sterols and Stanols, currently available in Benecol margarine or Take Control margarine will also lower your cholestrol. This stuff is pricier than other margarines but two tablespoons a day is good for about another 10% in lowering cholesterol.

If you don't want to switch your "butter", you can get plant stanol and sterols in capsules, called CardioSterol. This and other products (check out CardioTea) were created by one of Kansas City's top cardiology groups. It's the "real deal" and it is safe.

From personal experience, I feel certain you can drop your numbers at least 15% and possibly as much as 20% total if you do these two small changes. I've done these things and used these products and recommend them without reservation.

No known side effects and minimal changes to your lifestyle.

Good Luck!

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!

Good Info Toad, thanks.

In the last couple of days I have discovered alot. So far I have been able to change my eating habits and stick to it. There is alot more options out there than I thought there was.

Still.....gonna miss the butter though!

The whole thing is kind of an eye opener, thats for sure.

I work in a fairly high stress environment, and admittedly, I work way too much and eat like crap. I'm 46 now and unless I change some of my habits I'm not going to see grandchildren.

Maybe it's time to slow down and have a look at the roses.

I even went for a swim first thing this morning, and may continue that 3 or 4 times week.

Guess Mom's little boy is finaly growing up....*sigh*

cheers and thanks,
