Contrails and Heat Waves... Yep, you guessed it!
« on: April 19, 2006, 09:16:06 AM »
Here's what I think would make the game more intresting and MUCH more fun. Not only for MA, but for some larger H2H maps.

#1. Contrails in WWII is what is known as today's "Vapor-Trail". It is the white smoke that is blown out of the back of an engine from some of the fuel running off the back. The heat of the engine then evaporates it thus making the vapor trail (Known as contrails in WWII). It would be fun to have these set to activate and disipate around the 10K - 15K area. That would make tracking a bomber and fighter group simpler. Since contrails were known to stretch out almost 2 miles when at full throttle at times.

#2. Heat Waves are naturally generated and help to make the contrails. An engine naturally makes heat, and where there is enormous heat, you would see heat waves. So, i'm suggesting we get heat waves just as it looks here:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1160239052495025519&q=nightwish

Notice during Seconds 23 - 25 while the spitfire kills the ME-109. There are heat waves pouring out of the front engines area. That's what I am imagining for "Heat Waves" in Aces High. I think that would look pretty awesome.

Comments are welcome on this, and corrections... I'll have to think about it:aok :lol

Was not the worst movie ever, I liked it, and the thing about the 109, Those things are hard as heck to find and they wernt about to fake one with the computer, I met the pilot who flew the planes in that movie.

contrails are actually more to do with the ionisation of the water vapour in the air by the statically charged metal on the plane, but the fuel thing does add to it too.

as for it being in the game, i'd love to see it, but straight up no, i can tell you for sure right now. the frame rate would suffer a lot and everyone with ancient PC's would whine all the time.

I think the point was to show an example of WHY IT WOULD BE SWEET TO ADD THEM, not to criticize the movie from which the example was in.

I don't think it would, Lock On Modern Air-Combat does it fine. I'm not talking about a HEAVY contrail, just one that would make it a little more realistic.

Oh and Casper, thanks for getting this BACK ON TOPIC!

precisely my point, you need a far more powerful PC to run lomac than you do AH!;)

How about an option for con trails or not under video preferences? We have the option to turn on/off animated water, how about the option to turn on/off con trails?

Contrail Creation

Contrails are created in one of two ways:

1. First, the airplane's exhaust increases the amount of moisture in the air, which can push the water content of the air past saturation point. This causes condensation to occur, and the contrail to form.

Aviation fuel such as petrol/gasoline (piston engines) or paraffin/kerosene (jet engines) consists primarily of hydrocarbons. When the fuel is burned, the carbon combines with oxygen to form carbon dioxide; the hydrogen also combines with oxygen to form water, which emerges as steam in the exhaust. For every gallon of fuel burned, approximately one gallon of water is produced, in addition to the water already present as humidity in the air used to burn the fuel. At high altitudes this steam emerges into a cold environment, (as altitude increases, the atmospheric temperature drops) which lowers the temperature of the steam until it condenses into tiny water droplets and/or desublimates into ice. These millions of tiny water droplets and/or ice crystals form the contrails. The temperature drop (and therefore, time and distance) the steam needs to condense accounts for the contrail forming some way behind the aircraft's engines.

2. The wings of an airplane cause a drop in air pressure in the vicinity of the wing (this is partly what allows a plane to fly). This drop in air pressure brings with it a drop in temperature, which can cause water to condense out of the air and form a contrail.

Exhaust contrails tend to be more stable and long-lasting than wing-tip contrails, which are often disrupted by the aircraft's wake and are commonly very short-lived.

Slapshot I am very impressed that is one of the most accurate posts in here I have seen.
Good Job
P.S. I would like to see contrails. Since we already have "smoke", the ability must already be built into the ahii engine.

YAY! Someone agrees with me that seeing contrails would be intresting. Now what about the heat waves?

Oh, and Raptor. I like your statement that we should have an option to turn on/off contrails and heat waves. That way all computers can run AH the way they want to.

And as for the commet by slapshot. Thanks for the science lesson.:aok

Why?  Have you seen the coad?  Why wouldn't it be the same as 2 tracers?

I'd like to see it.  Better than inviso trees, Jeeps, or gun shake
