New pilot looking for a plane
« on: April 24, 2006, 10:48:49 AM »
Just what the subject says. Going to start back into Aces High and looking for a good plane to jump into and learn.

What do I want in a plane:

1. Turn fighter - The better turner the better - I am not patient enough for a E-fighter.

2. Would like to be able to carry a few bombs every once in awhile to drop on ground targets.

3. This is optional - My gunnery sucks. At least it used to and I don't expect it to change. I need guns with some good bang to em.

I am leaning toward a spit but not sure which one yet.

Any suggestions?

Spit VIII might be good choice; spit IX has good turning, and a little lighter too -- bu tno ord. Seafire probably best carrier plane for your tastes.

Both have hispanos, and honestly what more do we need?:lol

Best pure turner is prob the A6M, but lights up easily, weaker guns,  and slow for the MA.

If interested in something off the beaten track...the Ki-84 is a nicely balanced plane with some speed, guns, turning, and VERY deadly low speed handling when flaps get out.

You will see lots of Spit XVIs, but dont think of them as turners -- they are much better at rolling. They are often used, and usually misused, by less experienced players....and "should be considered cheating" when used by talented players.

Welcome back!

Try the spit XVI . can carry one 500 lb and two 250 lb . this will have a reduced range.
Or try the Nikki good range can carry two 250 kg  (250 kg= 500lb in game)
It has a ton of ammo but ballistics are a bit poor. Pull convergence in to about to 250 and dont fire untill they are close.

Hope this helps.

Spit XVI is a great plane, no doubt...but wouldnt try to use it as a pure turner. Throw in some vertical and yoiu can stay in the game, do it well and you'l get lots of kills....but in sustained turn be very careful.

I get lots of XVI kills when they try to use it as something it isnt, so dont make those mistakes and you'll be fine.

FYI --->

Smallest turn circles, from Kweassa's excellent testing post:

Type:            Radius
--------------------------------------
A6M2:            104.6m
Hurricane Mk.I:         111.0m
A6M5:            115.3m
Spitfire Mk.I:         117.3m
Hurricane Mk.IIc:      123.8m
FM-2:            128.1m
Ki-84-I-Ko:         133.2m
Spitfire Mk.IX:         134.3m
Spitfire Mk.V:         134.5m
Seafire Mk.II:         135.8m
F4F-4:            139.5m

That was pre-spit XVI, and before the added Spit VIII and the current patch -- but even so the XVI is by consensus not a top turner. After all, the wings have been clipped

I have not much to add to those suggestions. Spits, N1k, Ki are all great planes. My fav Spit would be the Mk9.

If you dont mind being on the slow side of the planeset, dont forget about the HurricaneMk2C. Quad Hispanos, one of the best turners and two small bombs. Low ammo load though.

Another good fighter that you can load with tons of bombs is the F4U-1D. If you dont mind working the flaps, rudder and throttle a lot. Guns are cal50, easy ballistics and some fast killing ability (provided you get up close and personal.

But if you want to fly the BEST fighter in game...... get a HurricaneMk1!!!! (Sorry, i just couldnt resist ;))

Try the FM-2 as well....:)
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Ki-84

Ki-61 (under used in the MA and a very nice fighter)

Hurricane IIC (be warned though its kinda slow)

Yak-9U

MC205

Mosquito VI (No, im not kidding)

Spitfire or N1K2 if you want to be like everybody else. Nothing wrong with that, but if you want to be different, try a road less traveled? You might like it.

: In regards to the Mossie, fly it only with 25 fuel and DTs in fighter mode (30 minutes flight time), and lose the tanks once you get into a serious dogfight with a single engined fighter. Stay below 15k. Get the views the way you like them, and fly it like a Spitfire.  Its cannons are absolutely lethal, and it will out turn many a/c. Its also one of the best low-med alt bomber killers in the game.

One last thing, if I may. Try mastering two types. Pick one that you like, and then try out a few others untill you get a #2 ride that you like as well, perhaps one that can do some things better than ride #1.

Do some research on their loads, flap settings, and speed/climb specs. Know what it can do.

Have a >< but of patience, it will pay off.

Gluck.

Ki61. Turns great, good guns, good climb, and has an astonishingly good climb speed (109 engine, but lighter airframe). Can stay with a P-47, at least a D, going straight down.

Treize (pronounced 'trays')- because 'Treisprezece' is too long and even harder to pronounce.

Well, as an add on to the Moss idea: If you like them a bit heavier.... try the 110 C. (50% fuel, which is about 40 mins in the MA and its light enough to be considered "fighter")

Sim i was going for a balance of air to ground , decent turning ability, and ammo loads.
Ki 84 is  good but lite ammo load when you ad in ballistics.

The only plane I would add is the FM2 decent range, good ammo load. and good air to ground load out. The plus is it turns well but slow top end and acceleration.

I think the g turns almost as good as the c , but it has much better cannon.
I know that once both of these buggers are light they can really drag out a turn fight.
