two questions
« on: April 25, 2006, 07:03:37 AM »
1)  Can someone give me an example of how to use the .target command?  I know it is .target and then a number, but when I try and use it I either get some thing that fills a third of my screen or I get nothing at all.  Also, should I get it to work, are the targets for GV or aircraft use?

2)  What does shift F4 do? I was advised to use it when in a GV but couldn't see the difference.

Any help will be appreciated.

2) Shift F4 switches to "ground vision range". That means more detail at closer range (ie GVs easier to spot) while cutting down on the displayed range. Its also a massive hit on FPS on most machines

1) .target ### brings up a white target sheet with black concentric circles floating to the North of your plane, at the distance you commanded. ie .target 400 will set the target at 400 yards to the north of your plane.

This it what it looks like at 350 yds:

If it fills 1/3 of your screen, its probably a little close ;).
You can use this target to visualise your convergence and gun dispersion for example. Put your convergence setting all the way out to 400, then get in the air and call up a target at d200. When you shoot at it now (level flight) youll notice that the hits are in two groups. When you have the target at convergence istance, youll only have one grouping for the hits.

This is an example of a Pony with convergence at 250 yards, i shot at the target bullseye from 3 different distances (150, 250 and 500 yards)

Hammer, AFAIK Shift F4 is default key for Ground vis. (Shift F1 - Shift F3 are Full, Medium and Short vision range).

The .target ### command puts a bullseye up at distance ### due north and at the same altitude as your plane. For example, .target 300 will put a bullseye up 300 yards from your plane at the same altitude. The target will stay at the same altitude as your plane at all times.

SHIFT F4 is "ground visibility" mode. You need to make sure that function is mapped. I don't think it is by default. I'm at work so can't walk you through that, but someone will.

Hope that helps.

To make the target disappear, use the .target 0 command.

Also, once your target is full of holes, using .target 0 will reset you to a new, clean one.

Remember that the target will always be at your current altitude, always to your ?west. That becomes important when you try to get used to weapons that drop in flight -- liek the luftwaffe rockets. Its easy to forget that if you nose up to allow for drop of the rockets, YOU'RE ALSO CLIMBING which makes your target move upward with you. So, the hit point will look lower than it would be in combat, where the bomber would be flying straight.
