Any old red baron on-line players?
« on: April 26, 2006, 04:17:25 PM »
We've had the old AW players question put to the community before. I was wondering if there are any of you guys that played the old Sierra Networks Red baron on-line? I played it for a couple of months in 1992 , before one of the guys I flew there with showed me Air Warrior DOS. Once I found that I left my old Ablatross for an FW-190.

At the time I thought it was the greatest thing going. The max you could have in any one battle was 4 vs 4 if I remember right. You had to waste away in a waiting room until an arena became available. Actually grapics-wise it was better then AW DOS which was still all grey airplanes. Red Baron used the game engine from the Box game. Air Warrior beat it hands down otherwise.

My handle was JagerJG3

The Red Baron they are talking about was long before RB3D. I did not play it online much, connections sucked in those days of 14.4 modems. it was still fun offline though, a far leap ahead of the competition. I cut my flight-simming teeth on BattleHawks 1942 and Strike Eagle in the late '80s, ahhh yes...the early days of 16 colors...sigh.

Red baron and aces of the pacific were my first sims, i still play redbaron 3d, its quite an organized community still, red baron world league, flanders in flames, all sorts of  events run weekly durring the summer, i am taking a break from it now since it takes so much time to go over the missions and do everything historicaly acurate as possible in the environment that rb3d provides. Check my sig thats the squad im part of. We all take on historical personas such, a tad hardcore for most to get into, i can only do this stuff durring the winters when i got time on my hands.

Ah yes I loved Battlehawks 1942 , Their Finest Hour and SWOTL. I got my very first flight sim around 1985. Hellcat Ace by Microprose. It was for my Atari 800 computer. It had a casstte drive. I would start loading the program, and go mow the lawn , or do some other chore when I came back it was loaded.

I used to dream of multiplayer on-line games like we have today, when I got my first modem. I'm glad somebody had the brains , and drive to give us things like AH.

That was my first flight sim too, though mine was on the C64.

Ahh, I too remember the RB3D days.  Was pretty good for it's time but always left you wanting more.  Thank goodness for AH.
