Congresswoman's Son Gets Jail for Slashing Tires

MILWAUKEE (April 26) - A congresswoman's son and three Democratic campaign workers were sentenced Wednesday to four to six months in jail for slashing tires outside a Bush-Cheney campaign office on Election Day 2004.

The men pleaded no contest in January to misdemeanor property damage. A fifth worker was found not guilty.

"This case had to be a public example of what can happen when you interfere with voters' rights," said Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Michael Brennan, who rejected prosecutors' recommendation of probation for the four men.

The state Republican Party had rented more than 100 vehicles to give rides to voters and poll monitors on Nov. 2, 2004. The cars were parked outside a GOP campaign office when the tires were punctured. The vandalism left the drivers scrambling for new vehicles.

Among those sentenced Wednesday were Sowande A. Omokunde, the son of U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wisconsin, and Michael Pratt, the son of former acting Milwaukee Mayor Marvin Pratt.

"I love my son very much. I'm very proud of him," Moore said. "He's accepted responsibility."

Omokunde was sentenced to four months in jail; Pratt and Lewis Caldwell of Milwaukee were sentenced to six months; and Lavelle Mohammad of Milwaukee was sentenced to five months. All were granted work-release privileges.

Brennan also ordered them to pay a $1,000 fine each, in addition to the $5,317 in total restitution ordered earlier.

The four could have faced up to nine months in jail term and fines of $10,000.

Wisconsin's 10 electoral votes in the 2004 election ended up going to Democrat John Kerry.

Nice to see they actually get to spend some time behind bars for their stupid actions, as well as paying for the damages.

Justice, indeed.

But..... you almost forgot about this, Dred?

Like, this was on your to-do list or something?

Slashing tires, a few months in the can, and a $1,000 fine. I applaud that ruling, but think these jerks deserve far worse.

But geeze....

You forgot to write down on your list, oh.... the convictions of 3 Republicans just this month in the New Hampshire phone jamming case.

You know, that case involving crippling the Dem's get out the vote system, James Tobin, his cronies, and his two dozen calls to someone in the White House over the 3 day duration of that election tampering?

Yeah, the tire thing has a sort of visceral appeal. Knives and rubber.

But this? It's way more interesting.

Just thought I should point it out, lest you "almost forget" it.

I took Dreds post as nothing more sinister or partisan than the news story reminded him of it.

But it really pissed me off anyhow!  :furious  :furious

Well okay. While we're talking about what gets ya pissed off when it comes to elections....

Just out of curiosity Holden, are you as angry about 4 kids slashing tires as you are angry about the multitudes of terror alerts during the run-up to the elections.... meant to frightening you, threatening your family's lives, altering people's behavior....

....that magically ceased to appear after the election?

.... that the then Home Security guy said were confusing if not patently objectionable and baseless?

I mean, when it comes to elections, there's politics and then there is politics. And then there are tires, and then there is this amazing spectacle of your own government threatening your very lives, terror alerts every week, terrorizing you, and Cheney insinuating that a vote against them may wind up in oblivion for everyone.

So... I mean.... what really gets ya going here? The kids?

I don't think it reflects your every day life, I doubt most do...but certainly the blood gets pumping when you type out such a post.  Just not sure what got you so riled in the starter post.  Never really noticed DREDIOCK to be a member of the right-wing canned though brigade, and I didn't see anything else sinister about the post.

Hey - I thought it was retarded that someone looked at their to-do list and brought up Dems slashing tires, when nothing ever gets said about Republican election tampering that's magnitudally gigantically worse.

The Republican convictions happened just this month, involving multitudes of calls to the WH, and the only thing people can remember is some tire slashing case?

There is something wrong with that.

And oh well.... I'm not exactly going to play along.

Call me crazy or whatever. Lol.... I already know it. :)

When the government warns me of a perceived danger (whether motivated by politics or reality), they are saying "look out!" not threatening my life.

But when somebody yells "Look out!" to me, it really pisses me off!    :furious

But not as much as when I climb out of the open manhole I just fell into.
