Author Topic: Online gaming crashes to desktop (Read 326 times)

Had this problem previously and thought it may have been my two week trial expiring. Opened an account last week, and tonight the problem started again.

Offline works fine, and when going online I can login and see the arenas. I can ping the individual arenas, but as soon as I attempt to enter any of them the following happens.

1) I load the textures
2) I end up in the tower with the clipboard displayed and a map
3) There are no field icons on the map, and no sound.
4) Crashes to desktop with the Windows message regarding the exe file encountering a problem and do I want to send a report.

I was online earlier tonight, and this week without any problems. Running 1024x768 with 1024 textures. Lowering the video settings yields no improvement.

First thing I'd try is turning the hardware acceleration down to 3/4 on the sound. Onboard sound is a common source of lockups.

If that doesnt do it, make sure your video settings are AA and AF to application pref. Sometimes there are issues with one or the other, sometimes not. Try it and see if you can get in.

Last thing I can think of is the power supply. The x1900 requires mucho power, more than any other video card on the market by a wide margin. Make sure your power supply is rated to give it the juice it needs, and then make sure the PS is actually putting out what it's rated for.

Thanks for the reply, I'll try those suggestions out and get back to you.

The power supply is a PC Power & Cooling 510w and all my voltages and temps seem well within spec. I'm able to run Prime95 (tested it to 4 hours) without a problem. Not a video test I know, but the system seems very, very stable.

Overall I'm not very impressed with XP Pro. I'm a Win2k Pro user but wanted to make the switch to XP. I might go back to Win2k but I need to look into how AH runs on it, and how my Cougar will work with it. Its been a long road to get back into AH. First there was the machine build, then my Cougar fried its pots, and now this.

Graphically the game has really improved in 3 years... I was surprised. Also the flight model seems much, much better. It was always pretty good, but the realism now can be surprising at times.

Nada improvement with the changes. I can actually get in and see field icons for a few seconds in arenas other then the main, but there is a white diamond in the middle of the map....

then I get booted.

Do you loose connection first, or does the game just crash to the desktop?

Ok, I seem to have solved my problem, I uninstalled AH and reinstalled the 3/30/2006 (AH2072) version and I'm back in. A couple of things I noted.

1) My OS boots off the E: drive
2) Uninstall was not clean, the HTC directory and all contents remained after the uninstall ran
3) I blew away everything and downloaded the latest version

That would have been my next suggestion. Something got corrupted in the install. Which actually isnt all that uncommon.

Glad its working for you now.

By the way, if you want to switch back to W2k, do a search on the BBS. I know one of the guys uses it and swears by it, just cant think of who it was atm. My own experiences with it for gaming were very iffy, but that was a long time ago.
