The Boss Lady of three of the juvenile units in our system has given me permission to draw up a list of educational movies or videos in order to start a film library at our camp.

The companies that specialize in this type of film usually charge out the wazoo for their goods;  $29.95 being the average price for a vcr tape.

I intend to bypass that system as much as possible and order from on-line sites in order to cut the costs.

I already have a fair number of historical films in mind, since that is the field of my major.  Films that teach character and a sense of duty or are literary classics, such as:  Sergeant York, True Grit, The Odyssey, etc.

Where I could use some help is getting suggestions from any of you who might have something to recommend that I haven't thought of.  So any work that you can think of that fills the bill please post it here.  It can be in fields other than history as well;  American and English literature and math.

Bear in mind, please, that the kids we teach are between the ages of 13 and 17, with varying degrees of academic talent;  some being nearly illiterate while others perform at a post-high school level.

Appreciate your help:

Regards, Shuckins

Thanks MT...I had forgotten about those two.

March of the Penguins?  Never seen it.  Would our thugs be turned off by it?  They don't take too well to "cute" films.

I wouldn't call March of the Penguins a 'cute' movie...it's a movie about hardship and endurance on both the part of the penguins and of the scientists.

But there is also Tora! Tora! Tora!

Another movie you may not have heard about is "Trinity and Beyond"

The Right Stuff would be a great movie for your kids...problem is getting them to sit through all four hours of it!!!

I'd also recommend "Big Fish", and "JFK"...

Maybe some Jack Johnson cd's too...

Tora, Tora, Tora, is a good historical movie, but don't forget about Hellcats of the Navy -  Midway - U-571 - Patton - and Run Silent, Run Deep.
