End of a streak...
« on: May 16, 2006, 08:53:35 PM »
Well, I ended up going for a kill streak this tour, kind of unintentionally.

I got to 109 kills in a spit 14 before my streak (and life) were suddenly ended by a 20mm shell from none other than an AR-234.

How's THAT for a classy ending?

The Spit 14 is a fantastic plane, I think it is priced at 20 perks now, and I think that is a fair price for it.

I don't know to be honest.

I'd have to fly the Spit 16 in the same way that I flew the 14 in order to make a fair comparison.  I flew the 14 fairly carefully.. I was careful not to fly into situations where'd I'd get gangraped, and for the most part I was successful in avoiding them.  I think I only remember 2 or 3 really close calls (getting chased back home by 4 or 5 cons, with no gas and no cannon).

For the most part I only flew it in situations where I could be sure I'd be fighting at most 2 guys at the same time.

When I flew the Spit 16 last month I just upped and plunged into the nearest furball, knowing I was going to die and just trying to kill as many as possible before that happened.

The Spit 14 is a great little plane though, I'll give it that.

The 234's defensive armament ia a 30MM isn't it, it's the only plane I've ever killed a 262 in. nice job on the streak B.T.W.

the 'old' urchin was just as relaxed as far as i can see, but then i never tried to wind him up.

109 is a great streak, all in one plane adds a certain imaginative story to the tour i would imagine. did you become increasingly cautious as the kill count climbed? fun to pretend your AH life is valuable, best new tour streak i got was about 12 kills in a spit5 in ah1

Yeah I would think comparing the 14 to the 16 would be apples and oranges due to the different fighting styles.

Man I don't know how you have the patience to fly like that, I know after about an hour or two picking the right fights I would need to get some down and dirty out of my system.

To me the spit1, spit5, and spit8 all seem related, and the spit9, 14, and 16 seem related. To me they arent all just spits. More like two variations.

Batfink, I don't think I got more cautious as the streak went on.  I actually didn't realize there was a "streak" until I got to 60 kills, but that was all in one night, I just kept upping and flying around.

Mars, I don't fly the Spit 14 any more cautiously than I do any other plane,  just try to avoid situations where I'm sure I'll be killed.  I'll still engage any one plane I come across, or any number of planes if I've got E on them.  It isn't like I'm running from fights, more like just avoiding the huge furballs that (almost invariably) involve all of one side dying.

Nice streak Urchin and yes, that was a classic end to it.

My record new Tour streak was 31 kills in a Mossie VI, but I ended on a completely non-classic collision with a Spitfire Mk IX that I was going for.  My fault too, I should have gone verticle and got him on the second pass.

The thing I remember most about that streak was doing an attack on an enemy field when I was at about 25 kills.  As I swept away after dumping the ordnance on the base the quartet or quintet of Ostis opened up on me.  I was looking back and around and I remember seeing a line of tracer pass just over my starboard wing slightly inboard of the #2 engine and then a moment later a tracer went right under the wing.  Escaping that attack run got the adreniline going.
